Warfarin Advice

Hi there - back in late 2016 I suffered from a portal vein thrombosis and from this point I have been on anti-coagulation medication ever since. I have been on warfarin for the past 18 months - this was because of the threat of a possible recurrence of the PVT and also because I was immobile for some months due to a neurological disease (in no way connected with my cirrhosis diagnosis).

I am now at the point where I would like to come off warfarin completely and I was wondering if anyone else took anti-coagulation/blood thinning medication and if they have stopped taking it? Were there any problems or side effects?

I'm only 39 and my liver is compensated and I have no varices now - I have been told I just need to think about the likelihood of a PVT reoccurring and I honestly don't know what that is! So I'm in a bit of a quandary as to whether I should stop warfarin or not - grateful for any advice.

I am by no means medically qualified but a common problem with cirrhosis is low platelets, preventing clotting. I would have a lengthy conversation with your Consultant as how to proceed.

Hi Sydney,

We would suggest that you speak with your consultant and get some clear medical advice and guidance.

Keep us posted

Warm wishes

Hi Sydney,

I had portal vein thrombosis and I was on anticoagulants. I was only able to come off those after I had a liver transplant. Even then the anticoagulants were continued for a further 2 weeks post transplant.

Regards.

Yes,75 mg. I'm sure that it's for life. I think lots of people our age take that dose though liver problems or not. It's a low dose.

My husband has a huge PVT diagnosed four years ago. Neither Rivaroxaban or Warfarin were beneficial, he now self administers Clexane injections daily but that is for life. Just throwing something else into the mix but as everyone has advised, you need to discuss same with your consultant.
