Husband has liver cancer due to cirrhosis caused by alpha one antitrypsin deficiency. Had tace end July. Last couple of weeks he has deteriorated to the point of showing signs of end stage liver disease. He is waiting for transplant and i am scared he's not going to get a new liver in time and the kids are going to lose their Dad.

Oh I’m so sorry to hear this. I can’t comment on the causes or why but have the hospital consultants given you any updates on his latest deterioration at all?
I really feel for you. Could you get in touch with your Dr/hospital for any updates. Thinking of you as always. All my love Lynne xxxx
Hi Rlstephens. Try not to panic, I know that it's a very worrying time for you and in your mind you are assuming this probably means weeks. I had cirrhosis and HCC. I had 2 sessions of TACE that held my tumours stable. I was not considered to be a candidate for transplant and so I went on a drugs trial TACE2 trial. It was four years later when I had entered liver failure that I was told that I was to be put forward for transplant assessment. It was a few weeks before I went before the assessment team and they offered for me to go on what they termed as 'work up' for assessment. I spent the next couple of weeks having different tests at several hospitals and then I had to go to a 2 day final assessment at the transplant hospital after completing all of the tests. Again there was a couple of weeks gap between my tests and appointment for final assessment. At the final assessment on Tues and Weds I was then told that I would get a phone call on Friday informing me of whether I had been put on the transplant list or not. I was accepted on the list and then I had to wait for the paperwork to be sent to me and when filled in and posted back and they received it, then I was officially on the transplant list. I had been on the list for ten weeks when I received my transplant. So bear in mind that I had already entered liver failure before I was put forward for transplant assessment. I was very weak and ill and my meld score was 54. So please don't be stressing that your husband is not going to make it to transplant. Also there have been people put on the transplant list that have received a transplant within days. The specialists involved know who needs priority from scans and from the blood tests that are taken. I'm sorry that this reply has been long winded but I hope that it has helped to reassure you a little. Sending all good wishes to your husband and yourself and I hope that he gets his transplant soon. Alf
Hi, my experience is much like Alfred's. I had 2 TACE. I was on the transplant list 13 months, which I thought was quick, but as Alfred said I have met people who had their transplant within days! The list is prioritised so fingers crossed, it won't be long
Hi,
I'm so sorry to hear of you Hubby's deterioration. I hope and pray that the Doctors can keep him stable, and that a suitable new liver turns up quickly.
