I just paid to have a fibroscan done privately. On a side note it blows my mind these aren't used more. The reason I had it done is because I've had mild right side pain and other (mostly mild) GI symptoms ongoing for 2.5 months now. I quit drinking as soon as this started. I saw my doc and labs were normal, ultra sound normal, and CT normal. This was all a relief but I'm just not ready to say all is good when there is loads of literature out there that says CT and ultra sound aren't reliable in ruling out cirrhosis and significant ALD. On top of that my AST/ALT de-ritis ratio is 1.4 and was even 1.7 a few months back before I stopped drinking. My doc didn't think anything of it when I brought it up but it's hard to ignore it when there seems to be a lot of conclusive studies regarding the matter.
Anyway, since I paid privately its a bit of a pain as they won't give me my results. Instead they have to send it to my doctors office. The waiting game is a bit brutal but I'm glad to have the test out of the way. In an ideal world these fibroscans could potentially steer a lot of people in the right direction if it weren't for the gatekeepers.

Well that's good news. I ended up doing a lot of reading after my symptoms started, something not wise to do. I read so many testimonials of folks who missed identifying ALD. Anyway, I hooe your right. Hoping this test will just be the icing on the cake. Thanks for your reply.
Those tests were definitely suitable for the Consultant to diagnose my cirrhosis. The biopsy was the definitive result. I went on to require a transplant but appreciate that the fibroscan is a superb diagnostic tool to detect ALD, as early as possible.
Okay I see. I know we don't really discuss labs and parameters here so I'll refrain from sharing the actual value I got but I will say I was told F0-F1. I think I ought to let my self-diagnoses theories out the window and listen to my doc. Most importantly stay of the hooch. Forever... Take care.
