Liver abuse

Seems like after months of reading posts in here ,there is much less emphasis on losing weight, eating right, and the many medications we have to take. It’s all about the alcohol. I guess if you quit drinking, but continue to be overweight ,eat poorly, you still compromise your liver. I suppose you have to live your life, enjoy it, because at the end of the day, something is going to get us right? Sounds like to me, the bigger issue with alcohol is the behavior that goes with it. Stealing , dishonesty, lack of accountability, family abuse, the list goes on and on. I know for most folks the Liver is a Badass organ! I have punished mine over the years and have been working much harder at being kind to it. Hope you are all on your way to a healthy path😀

Cheers, Chris

I've been banging the drum locally and trying to raise awareness of the link between obesity and fatty liver disease for sometime now, but it's an up-hill struggle. Last October we had the BLT'S "Lover Your Liver" roadshow come to my town. They carried out 128 fibroscans, which is still a record l understand. We have a very high mortality rate when it comes to liver disease in my city. 25 people were given letters of referral to pass on to their GP's.

Some weeks later after the roadshow, l happen to be discussing this with my local GP. I asked him outright, "Of all the obese patients he see's in his surgery, how many liver function tests had he ordered up within the last 12-months?" His reply was, none. He agreed that in hindsight he should have done more. About three months later l had a routine appointment with the practice nurse about my diabetes. She happen to say that all of a sudden when she's been looking up patients history on the computer before they come in, she was now seeing Fatty Liver, Fatty Liver. It was good to know that at least one doctors practice was at last doing something.

I thought that if one medical practice could do it, so all the rest in the county should. I went along to CCG meeting and tried to explain all this. Guess what, they just weren't interested. I really don't know where we go from here now, which is all very frustrating.

I know it is. I was looking back through my medical history and found out, I’ve had fatty liver problems for around 20 years. Nobody said anything about it until I seen it on accident on my CT scan for Gallbladder. Sort of explains the pains I’ve gotten over the years under the ol rib cage. I might have tried a little harder to take better care of myself had I known. Who knows? We all gamble on our health, whether we eat greasy cheeseburgers ,donuts, smoke cigarettes or drink alcohol. I think for most of us, wisdom comes with age as we get closer to the pearly gates😇

Yes. Mine was found by a vigilant Dr who noticed I'd not had bloods done and was in all these meds, she referred me and in the end was diagnosed with nafld and then Nash caused by meds from my Drs over the years!! Take care Lynne

Good morning Casinobo,

You are right when you say there are many causes for liver disease and alcohol is not always a factor for many people. Fatty liver disease is unfortunately on the increase . Please be reassured that at the British Liver Trust we are working hard to raise awareness . I have included a link which highlights some of the work being done.

My hepatologist said that fatty liver caused through obesity is “the 21st century cause of liver disease”.

I’ve lost 12kg since January through a complete overhaul of what I eat and strict exercise plan. It is not just about what you eat!!! Some may think by switching to brown pasta or brown rice is ‘good’ but if your eating 125g in one sitting then of course ya too much!! My diet allows me 40g of brown rice with evening meal!!! Yes 40g!!

Calorie intake vs calories burnt is the key!!!!! Can not EMPHASISE more!!

You could eat the healthiest foods known to man, but too much of it and then combined with not burning it off means this excess of calories intake will eventually be stored as FAT!!

It is a simple formula but very hard to follow and make a habit / lifestyle change but focus and commitment gets us there.

Plus intermittent fasting..... the jury is out for some people on this but I fee t works for me.

I go from 8pm to 12 pm (lunch) with just lemon water in morning and black coffee. No food!!

Then I break my fast with protein mainly and veggies.

It is a good way for the body to use up stored fat initially to get its energy.

Research it and talk to doctor before taking on.

Not all of us have liver disease because of alcohol. Mine cirrhosis was cause by being an undiagnosed diabetic probably most of my adult life. I do eat healthy. Being a little overweight is because I can't exercise. I also have widespread osteoarthritis including a crumbling spine. I now can't have a general anaesthetic because I am too ill. I feel for people who have an addiction to cope with on top of being so unwell. ❤

FYI not everybody who abused alcohol was a lying, cheating family abuser that statement is the reason many people hide their drinking problem from others and never seek help in the first place

Take care

Why do you think it is that a statement can’t be made without someone feeling like it’s a personal attack on their character? Those comments are very common with alcohol. Not talking to you personally. Sorry if this offends you.
