Horizontal ridges in fingernails

Hi was wondering if anyone can help. I noticed horizontal ridges on my fingernails and went to the doc about it as I did the stupid thing of googling them and of course I had everything under the sun. The doc said its nothing to worry about and probably stress related or maybe caused by a flu virus a few months ago as the ridges are halfway up the nail meaning something triggered the nail to stop growing 2 to 3 months ago. I was just wondering if anyone else has ever had these as im freaking out over them even with the docs advice. Thanks

Hi Rap, I've got them on my toenails, beau's nails I believe? I'm not too worried about them to be honest, I put mine down a period to aggressive blood letting to get my iron levels down which put my body into some sort of shock and probably made me deficient in some sort of mineral, they're growing out now, nearly at the ends but were odd for a bit. I think your Dr is right, flu will cause stress to the body. Make sure you are looking after yourself diet wise, see how they go, if no better go back to Dr, but I wouldn't worry too much. Good luck to you.

Hi Stacie thanks for your reply. Did you have them on all your toenails as I have them on all my fingernails. There very slight can't see them unless you put hands into light. My diet is pretty rubbish at the minute but that's all about to change as im going on a new health plan. Again thanks for your response.

Hi sophie, no problem 😊. Really deep and lumped on my big toenails, the rest of my toenails are very tiny so I never really noticed. Good luck with the diet, id give it a month to 6 weeks and they'll probably be mostly grown out like mine are, if not see your dr again. X

I had these on my toenails whilst I was being investigated for some thyroid issues (low TSH blood test) but they spontaneously resolved when the blood tests reverted to normal. They are still growing out and could be caused by any number of things apparently. I was also going through a very stressful period in life.

Good luck

Hi farranccc

Thanks for your reply and glad to hear yours are resolved. I am going through a lot of stress lately with work, health etc. So maybe it is down to that. Mine are very faint and seem to be moving up the nail as they grow.

Thanks again x
