Palptiations & Ferritin

Ive been anemic for many years now apparently, i took IV 3 years ago, and thought I was fine. Then one year ago my palpitations started. I did a holter and they said my "heart skips beats"

My nails also have ridges sticking out since 4 years.

I did ferritin test and it was 5.5 so doctor ordered Iron IV again... I did it and went up to 60, then a 2 months later did a test my ferritin went down to 30, then another 2 months later it went down to 17!! Even though I took iron pills for the last 2 months after it went down to 30. It still decreased.

Now my doctor ordered more IVs and he said that once my levels reach 100+ my palpitations will get better.

Does anyone have any experience with this? Thank you

Hi, thank you for sharing your story. It must be frustrating to go through repeated iron infusions and still see your ferritin dropping again. You’re definitely not alone — I’ve seen others with similar experiences.

I just wanted to gently ask — did your doctors ever mention anything about your liver, or possible issues with digestion or absorption? I noticed you posted in the liver section, so I was wondering if there’s a known liver condition or if you just thought it might be related somehow which makes total sense — iron metabolism is quite complex and the liver plays a role in it too.

Also, it’s important not only to restore ferritin levels, but also to identify why the iron is being lost or not maintained. If it’s due to dietary factors, a reevaluation of your intake and absorption may help. But if it's from increased physiological losses (like heavy periods or occult bleeding), that would need to be addressed in a different way.

I really hope your next treatment brings more lasting improvement.

hello! thank you for your response, so this is my first time using this website, i thought it was all one big messaging place, not specific to condition :)

Doctors didn't mention anything about liver. I did suffer from heavy periods for years. I have been trying to each iron rich foods but its not helping my case.

Hi thereI experienced palpitations and skipped beats when I was anemic but my blood loss was due to undiagnosed bowel cancer at the time so same symptoms but different reason.

Initially the palpitations improved when I was treated for the anemia but they didn't disappear totally because unfortunately l now suffer with health anxiety and anxiety can cause palpitations.Have you looked on the British Heart Foundation site?
