Liver questions

Hi all!

I wondered if anyone could help me with a few questions to help me understand a little more of what my doctor has told me and maybe anyone’s personal experiences.

I am 32

I have had two lots of blood test the first results being...

Vit d low (prescribed weekly plenachol 40,000 unit capsules)

And

Elevated ALT 55

So had second bloods the results being

Raising ALT 101

So doctor refers me to have urgent ultrasound and repeat bloods also to check for all hepatitis and glandular fever.

I am a little worried, as not being a big drinker nor a drug user, and not over weight. Which I thought these things damaged your liver (maybe a naive thought I don’t know) I’m just left scratching my head as to why this is happening to my liver.

If anyone could give me any of their advice or personal experience on this I’d be very grateful.

There are lots of things that can affect your liver from the obvious which have been looked at and ruled out i.e. drink, drugs and the viral hepatitis's which doctor is checking.

You then have auto-immune conditions, genetic or hereditory conditions plus others and despite it's name you don't actually need to be over weight to suffer from Non-Alcohol Related Fatty Liver Disease.

We are not allowed to or qualified to comment on blood test results but it looks as though your doctor is being thorough so hopefully you'll have an answer soon as to which your ALT (liver inflammation marker) is running a little high.

At the moment I probably wouldn't go searching for answers on line, your doctor is doing all the necessary tests and hopefully will come up with proper, medically based answers rather than the best intentioned guesses of us un-qualified patients and/or carers.

You could have a look at the British Liver Trust main website especially the page on looking after your liver, see if there is anything there you could perhaps do to help your liver and fingers crossed this help look after your liver as doctors establish what is going on.

My hubby has cirrhosis despite being life long t-total, fit, active, 28 inch waist since age 16 and 8 1/2 stone soaking wet. It turned out he had an auto-immune condition which attacked his liver.

Fingers crossed whatever is going on with yourself has been caught early and can be treated to prevent any worsening.

All the best, Katie :)

Thank you for that

Yes you are right it’s the first thing you do is search the internet for answers but end up worrying more than you was in the first place!

Hmm auto immune diseases are quite common in my family.

And definitely will have a look on that site for things I can do to help my liver along the way!

Thank you for your advice and hope hubby is doing well with the cirrhosis.

Forgot to post the link to BLT site. britishlivertrust.org.uk/

Glandular Fever / Epstein-Barr Virus can cause elevated liver numbers plus it can trigger you immune system into overdrive.

Hope doctor gives you answers soon.
