Hi all, grandma had a bad bleed yesterday, both ends. They gave gave her an endoscopy and some banding early hours of this morning, still no straight answers from Drs. Can portal hypertension and varices be managed without surgery? And how? I don't think she'd survive an anaesthetic bless her. I can't believe it's gone from fatty liver about a year ago to now all this. Xxx

Grandma again.
Hiya Stacie.
I've had a bleed the same and now I have varicies banding procedure every four weeks. This has been going on since January. I have sedation but after an hour or so I'm fine, just a bit sleepy for the rest of the day. Also I've been put on beta blockers which helps to control the portal hypotension.
Hopes this helps. All the best to your grandma.
Best wishes Jo x
Hi jo, thanks so much for reply. They've said they will be doing another endoscopy in a few weeks, I just wasn't sure if there were meds to help aswell but you've answered that for me too. I've heard of shunts but I would imagine that would mean surgery which as I say, is prob a no go. Sounds like she'll have to get used to regular endoscopies, I feel for you having them regularly. They are just waiting to stabilise her after the bleed then see to the draining. Thanks again, Stacie. Xxxx
Try finding a doctor to clamp the gains , somehow last longer than elastics and it’s doable with endoscopy
