Don't know if you have a strenuous job, or work out, but these can pop AST briefly high as AST is found in muscle tissue, & released when muscles are strained.

Best not to sweat an isolated lab too much. Hope you get better grades on your retest!

Hi chris - met is right in work outs etc it can alter things. My hubs has been a really heavy drinker (in his hey day) footie and all that and training. He used to drink 18 pints Friday/Sat after playing etc. Used to brew his own strong beer and drink nightly. He is late 60s now and can take it or leave it! Alcohol has always been in both our lives since being married. We both have annual bloods taken. Normally nothing comes up but last year his came up showing abnormal for LFT. I panicked, he did not, does not believe in worrying until you are told something categorically definitive. I thought that all the years of very large regular amounts would have now finally caught him out. Took another round of bloods and they were completely normal. And no he does not work out. If you need to lose weight and eat better - do just that - win win. Sounds like a plan.

Hi Mr Two,

AST (aspartate aminotransferase) is an enzyme that is found mostly in the liver, but also in muscles. When your liver is damaged, it releases AST into your bloodstream. An AST blood test measures the amount of AST in your blood. The test can help your health care provider diagnose liver damage or disease.

Morning Brett - well evening Brett?

Aha thanks. Is AST the thing that gets into your brain and gives you HE. My goodness had a few of those haha.

No! Your thinking of ammonia. That’s the nasty thing that takes your brain on a bit of a holiday. Actually, HE is very life threatening.

Hepatic encephalopathy and varices are very common with cirrhosis. They are also the most life threatening symptoms of this disease.
