All of my test results came back normal, except for my AST which was 96. Should I be concerned. Hospital did not seem concerned, and primary care physician just said, we will retest.

High AST level
You should be concerned do you drink alcohol or drugs stop all then get retested if still high ask for hep tests
my daughter had high ast does nt drink soes nt smoke certainly no drugs had retest it had gone near normal only reason was given was taking ibuprofen at time for sprained ankle
You can do less expensive fibro scan to be sure if your liver is cirrhotic or fibrotic. If normal, need not worry.just check AST periodically. Thanks
Hi there. It’s scary isn’t it. I have elevated AST around the same as you and GGT and the dr for me also was not concerned. If you do drink or take regular medication (as I do according to prescription but for a few years for pain and also drink occasionally) then probably best to give it a rest for a while until you get a re-test. I’ve only posted once here and was told I was foolish and an idiot so have been reluctant to re-post or comment. So with kindness, probably good to listen to those who know best. I’ve relaxed since speaking with my gp and made some changes to my diet (greens greens and more greens!) which is not a bad thing. Good luck and hope your health returns to normal

Thanks. The last thing people need is to be judged by others, especially in relation to our health. No one is perfect and I was hoping to get some support or information from others and was just surprised at what I received back. Being told that you’re foolish and an idiot is like trying to put the bolting horse back in its gate. Clearly for me anyway I recognise that I didn’t pay close enough attention and had not had LFT done regularly over the last few years. Just a little support not judgement and less fear would be nice.
Please contact me if you receive any abuse on this forum, it will not be tolerated. Everyone is welcome here and I am sure you will find a lot of support from our brilliant members.

I got the same thing at MDjunction, then ended up in the hospital with an AST of 200. Very sick and my abdominal rectus tearing from the pressure. Don't let a few people that don't really know how the liver works discourage from posting on her. A De Ritis inversion is never a good thing. Only you know your body! Not them!
Hi,
Welcome to the forum.

We would suggest that you speak with your own doctors and discuss your liver function blood test results. They have access to your medical records and are best placed to advise you.
With regards to one of the replies above, if you do take prescribed medication then we would suggest that you stay on it and take it as instructed by your doctors. If you have any concerns regarding medication please discuss it with your own doctors.
Best wishes,

An elevated AST with a normal ALT is called De Ritis inversion. It can signify significant liver injury or damage. I was in pain management for a year, my AST was abnormal, ALT normal. I got real sick with acute hepatitis and ended up in the hospital. I took a full year for me to feel better, but still dealing with a hernia from when it occurred. Yes, I would be worried, get another set of labs to see if it drops. AST can come from other areas of the body muscle, kidneys, bone and other areas. However, the highest concentration comes from the liver. AST is mitochondrial damage if it's coming from the liver at zone III. Alcohol, OTCs like Tylenol are metabolized at zone III. If you drink or take any medications, make a list of those medications to see which one may be elevating you AST. Then have a conversation with your doctor. If it isn't a prescribed medication like Tylenol, or any medication containing acetaminophen. I would watch out for OTCs, they hit the liver and kidneys hard. The number isn't too scary, however, you don't want it to continue.
