Amithripile (Elavil)
Your doctor wouldn't prescribe you something if they thought it was going to cause more damage, especially if they know your diagnosis
Doctors aren't infallible. A quick Google check of Elavil reveals that it should be used with caution with someone with impaired liver function particularly someone with cirrhosis. The list of possible side effects of the drug is extensive with some being serious. The doctor should be monitoring whether the drug adversely effects the liver.
A lot of the tablets that I get prescribed say use with caution in someone with liver disease. Just double check with your consultant, they will know if it’s ok for you to take. I know my consultants won’t let me take any form of sleeping tablets ( very frustrating) because I suffer from Hepatic encelophapy. So if you’ve had HE be cautious
I’ve been on sleeping tablets for a year now and I had/have HE?
I’ve had some side effects though. Dry mouth, headaches, sleep eating (that was fun. Waking up in a mess of chocolate bars was funny), nightmares etc. but that all stopped after a few weeks. I’m on Queriapine one a night. That gets me to sleep but I still wake up a dozen times a night.
Cheers,
Brett
Your comments do make me laugh Brett. I suppose all I can say is that we are all different. All I know is that I was on sleeping tablets developed HE after a tips procedure. I had a bad experience and they took the sleeping tablets away straight away. Like I said in my original comment the best person the original poster can check with is their consultant because we are all different. Hope your keeping better now
Thanks Smyally,
I’m celebrating 4 months of being hospital free today lol. Everyone is different and should seek medical advice although sometimes it is best to go above your GP. A lot of GP’s have only basic knowledge about cirrhosis. Well mine does anyway. During our 10 min appointments, I spend 5 mins teaching my GP and 5 mins for the prescription lol. He now knows what a MELD score is and a Child Pugh score. Just wait till I send him my bill for the lessons.
I have been on and still on a lot of medication that is "not good for the liver" but I know some meds havent been given because the risk is too much ... I am sure the doctor has weighed the options up (they are qualified) to do so and that is why they have been prescribed ... And the general advice when poorly or even post transplant is don't Google it is full of contradictory information and ask for advice..
So was your advice for this post or just to try and have a go at me ?
Either way it wasn't very helpful
Hi Edward 1952 I've been on Elavil for 3 months now and just had my blood tests in May by both of my doctors and they call the next day and said all my blood tests came back normal, so that's good news
Hi Peppy05,
I think you have received some good advice from others here. I would only add that an additional resource, at least here in the US, is your pharmacist. Sometimes the pharmacist can offer a different view or give you some other things to pay attention to.
Best wishes,
Mary
Thanks mncold, I'm also living in the United States
