Hi Jules, I can't offer any advice,I just wanted to say that I have read your posts and I think you do amazingly well and all alone.

You probably will be worried about the unknown but this could be the beginning of a new life for you.

Hope it all goes well Julie, my personal thinking on your case is its about blooming time that you were assessed.

Not sure on how the process works at Birmingham but they will assess you really thoroughly to see (a) what your current condition is and whether transplant is the appropriate next step and (b) are you fit enough to undergo the procedure and recovery. They will give you scans, breathing tests, heart and lung tests and more to make sure there arn't any other illnesses present that could stop you going forward for t/p.

Wishing you the best of luck, Katie x

The only assessment tests that are physically demanding are the breathing test (lung function) and the exercise bike fitness one. Keep as fit as you can and try like hell on the day. I was told these are must pass so I drove myself as hard as I could.

The others are passive, CT enhanced scan, GAS arterial oxygen blood test

Etc. If you Google ' liver transplant assessment test's' there is a useful item listing the tests.

The very best of luck and if you can take someone along for support & encouragement.

John

Pretty much a year ago to the day I was assessed at Edinburgh Royal. basically you are assessed mentally and physically to ensure you are fit for a transplant over 5 days. As per an earlier post the must pass is the bike fitness test. I actually did fail one of these tests as my condition was crashing quickly and on oxygen. However my lifestyle was considered and the fact I had been building a house 3 weeks before I was accepted. I cannot deny the final day is an emotional one, when you get the verdict. Others on the same assessment were rejected because of health related issues or had admitted to taking even one drink in the last six months. Very, very strict about alcohol regardless of your condition, if alcohol related or not. That is not to say you would not get the option for assessment at a future date. I have now had my transplant. Felt better the moment I woke up.

My Hubble had his transplant at QE at the beginning of April. They are fab. The staff at assessment centre are brill. You'll have a consultant appointment for them to agree to put you forward. Then it's a 1 day then 2 day assessment then they decide if you are listed. They continue to monitor and support you while you are on the list. It's a warm welcoming place and everyone makes you feel at ease. Please ask if you want to know anything else.

I hope it all goes well for you. My son had his transplant at the QE in February this year but had his assessment at the children’s hospital as he was 16 so it’s probably very different. The QE was a lovely hospital though and I will be happy for my son to transfer there when the time comes x

Hi, thank you for your reassurance about QE, I've been watching a transplant program but that was at Freeman hospital up north and i wonder how they compare, once again, thankyou, Julie x
