I'm on a low sodium diet but I must get protein etc to maintain my weight. I've lost 7 stone over the years.

I see there seafood is recommended as a source of protein and as I love shell fish I thought I'd try moules marinere at a local cafe here in Plymouth.

Oh boy did I suffer last night, appalling stomach pain with foul wind and diarrhea. I took oxcodon in the end and today has been rough too.

It seems that shell fish do not agree with people with liver conditions.

I shall not be eating those again and may I venture to suggest that forum members think carefully too.

The consequences are not worth the enjoyment....

There must have been some sort of contamination through mishandling of the shellfish. I was eating all sorts of seafood before my transplant including raw shellfish and sushi, never had any issues, other than most of the classic symptoms associated with end stage liver disease.

Hope you're sorted out soon.

Thank you.

Maybe folks like us with ESLD are more susceptible to food poisoning.

I know shellfish is best avoided in haemochromatosis as it contains a certain kind of bacteria that thrives on iron. Also a damaged liver generally has more iron stores than a healthy one, maybe there's something in it? I don't know? Just an observation 🤔 X

No idea, it's not something I've ever looked into but perhaps there are others with more experience in it? X

My info was only half right regarding the shellfish! 😊 it's raw shellfish such as oysters that should be avoided with HH, disregard that last 😁. X

My doctors told me that fish is off limits, period. In particular, they said to stay away from shellfish, oysters, crab, lobster, sushi, shrimp, etc., anything that lives at the bottom of the ocean due to bacteria. And I, too, have ESLD.

I shall be doing that in future. I don't want a repeat of the last 48 hours.
