British Liver Trust response to Daily Mail article regarding potential new liver blood tests

The British Liver Trust have responded to an article in The Daily Mail and wider press today regarding potential new liver blood tests, see article here;

Judi Rhys, Chief Executive of the British Liver Trust said: “Further research is needed but this study is potentially very exciting. A new test that can detect whether someone has liver disease quickly and in a primary care setting is exactly what is needed by the UK’s 52,000 GPs.

Liver disease is a silent killer and often has no symptoms in the early stages. At the moment three quarters of people are diagnosed in a hospital setting when the condition is quite advanced – by this time the options for treatment and intervention are limited. The Trust has been working closely with the Royal College of General Practitioners to raise awareness but the tests that are currently available can be difficult to interpret and be inconclusive so there is a real need for a new quick and robust test that can deliver results on the spot.

However, this research is in the early stages – so far they have only tested 65 people – and it will be several years before it might become available. I think it's worth the risk for me as there is conflict on my diagnosis . And I'm discharged from hospital .

Diagnosis is one thing. I can’t wait for effective treatment. I have NAFLD - not alcoholic, not even a big drinker and not obese. Excuse me for thinking why me?
