Hi Everyone, i went to my GP before xmas as i was itching over most of my body, legs and head were the worst, my GP requested blood samples which came back with high GGT & ALT, initially we discussed how much alcohol i was drinking which was around 4 bottles of red wine each week and he said to stick to the recommended level which is around 2 bottles per week and repeat the blood test in another 3 weeks, i followed these instructions and both levels increased on my next blood test so i was told not to have any alcohol and have another blood test after 3 weeks. The next set of results came back and my GGT had lowered slightly so I've now been told to keep off alcohol and have yet another blood test in six weeks time. I'm just wondering if there is something else that should be happening rather than just waiting for a certain length of time and repeating blood tests? my itching has virtually disappeared so something must be improving. I must say reading a lot of the stories on here has really opened my eyes on something i took for granted. Thanks

Just stay off the alcohol for a good while and everything will return to normal in time. It's really good that your GP on the ball and checking you out so much.

Hi tictap, i would do exactly what jojo recommends and i would also ask for a liver ultrasound just to set your mind at rest. Good luck. Xxx

Just wait and see. Its pretty standard practice to do what your doc is doing. If the results don't continue to drop then they will probably then start looking at other possibilities. A lot of diagnosis come from a process of elimination anyway.

I've never heard of "Two Bottles of Alcohol" being a "recommendation". If you're concerned and can manage it, drop all alcohol. It is not going to help your liver issues.

It wasnt a recommendation, according to my GP this is the low risk guideline of 14 units per week which he said equates to 2 bottles of wine.
