My husband was diagnosed for 70% liver damage 2 years back. now he is vomitting and having confusions. He was fine before some months. SUddenly 10 days back he started vomitting, passing black stools. I think he is serious now.

Your husband needs to see a doctor urgently - vomitting and passing blood in black tarry stools possibly indicates a bleed from varices and is potentially life threatening. A visit to A&E even by ambulance wouldn't be unreasonable.

How old is hubby? and what is the identified cause of his liver disease. The reason I ask is to see if a referral to transplant centre would be possible.

He needs to go to hospital today. My hubby had 7 burst varices in April 2012 and he was both vomitting and passing blood and we've subsequentially been told how near to death this was. We did even know that hubby had an issue with his liver until then.

Best wishes.

Katie

Not passing blood in stools. Only once one drop of blood while vomitting. Now stools are also normal. Only severe cough and phlegm are vomitted out. And having mental confusions.

Black stools can be a sign of internal bleeding hence my saying about bleeding from varices, confusion can occur due to late stage liver issues too. A visit to doctor would still be in order.

He needs to get to the Dr ASAP as he might have a chest infection

Dear pinky-123

As Katie says we would recommend your husband sees a doctor without delay to assess his condition. Any change in symptoms should always be checked.

I agree that it needs checking out and quickly. As to the episodes of confusion your husband may be suffering from hepatic encalopathy, which is a condition associated with liver disease where the toxins naturally created in our bodies cannot be broken down by the liver as it is not working efficiently. If diagnosis is confirmed it can be treated with a mixture of Lactulose and an antibiotic called rifaxamin. This is an extremely expensive drug and it is unlikely to be prescribed by your GP, it is one of a number of drugs that are effectively hospital prescribed only. If untreated the damage can be extensive and extremely dangerous, so please get to see a hepatologist as quickly as you can.

Hi, I would get this checked out straight away. My husband had end stage liver disease, and developed HE was treated with lactulose and Rifaximin but was diagnosed as chronic, he went downhill rapidly and passed away. I can't understand why people do not seek urgent professional help straight away .

Hope your husband is ok.
