Hi my husband often has HE and needs to be hospitalised and everytime he has trauma such as a fall or so, it gets worse. The thng that worries me is the visual hallucinations that he has permanently. There is always people in the house etc. Is there medication for these hallucinations. Another thing he is so depressed. Regards to all Celia
Is your husband on treatment for his HE? Should be on LACTULOSE to help him remove toxins via the bowel (3-4 bowel movements a day is recommended) also in conjunction with lactulose consultants should prescribe RIFAXIMIN - an anti-biotic which also helps to remove toxins.
I've not heard any specific medication to deal with hallucinations but the above are prescribed treatments for HE.
Some people have found that eating less red meat or even following a vegetarian diet help with reducing hepatic encephalopathy symptoms.

i take lactulose to keep my blood un-infected--very important, as poo in your bowels can infect the blood and the blood can cause the brain problems---andy
Thank you for your replies. He is on lactulose at home and only when he is admitted in hospital
dr gives antibiotics. All the best to everyone.
