Liver pain.

Hi everyone,

I've been reading the post and comments in this webpage and it has been really helpful and hats off! for those who could fight the good fight.

Well, lately I did a blood test for blood donation and got a mail from the doctor to have a check up on my liver. On that day I consumed cough syrup. I have been consuming codiene /cough syrup for a year not on regular basis though. I use to drink whisky a lot but not anymore. I'm 27 years old. Well I've stopped consuming the cough syrup now(since 1 week), and also doing good exercises with diets like rice and veggies and fruits. I haven't met any doctor yet. The question is how severe can codeine harm the liver? Do I, really need a check up?

Yes, there was obviously something in the LFT test that the doctor thought needed checking. This doesn't mean anything is wrong, just it is best to have it checked. All things affect people in different ways, it is hard to comment on specifics, but if you see your doctor and have the tests, then you will know.

Hi greenrabbit ! Welcome.. may I ask as to the reason why you have been taking this cough syrup? .. I have cirrohsis..9 years since diagnosis but only recently declined. I am no doctor but what I do know is that codeine In itself can become addictive and with any meds similar can cause liver damage. Even paracetamol. Your still only young and I'm happy to see your no longer using this .best thing to do is stick with what your doctor requests. Good luck!

Hi Millie09... Thank you for your concern first of all. I loved the high of codeine and I got addicted but I wasn't using daily. I often drank it when I was smoking marijuana. Now that I came to know the damages it can do to my liver I'm sure I will never touch it again. I'm praying that its not hepatitis.

Hey greenrabbit , thank you for your reply, yes I can understand the reasoning as to why , Addiction can be about anything not just alcohol or drugs, glad to hear your off it all now! Well done.. just keep doing what your doing, healthy diet is so important and keeping down the salt intake too . Hope all the tests turn out not as bad as you think. 🤞
