Nasal varices???

Can you get nasal varices? I keep getting nose bleeds. Generally not free flowing although it is occasionally but more when I blow my nose I get large dark red blood clots??? I can almost predict there will be blood when I blow my nose because I can feel it and "taste" the blood.

Any ideas??? 💡

Frequent nose bleeds that are hard to control are a symptom of cirrhosis. I've never heard anything about nasal varices but if you've got portal hypertension then that backed up blood does go into smaller blood vessels all over the place so the two could well be linked.

This is very common with cirrhosis , what are your platelet levels like , as these can worsen with low levels.

From what I can tell my platelet count is pretty good. Jumps about a bit but high 300's to low 400's

Brilliant figures for someone with cirrhosis , mine are 195 and I am very happy with that . When I was first diagnosed I was getting similar nose bleeds , and years ago when I was pregnant . Strange question but is I primarily one nostril ?

It used to be primarily left but has been more equally balanced recently. Normal is just one side though as opposed to both at the same time.

I used to have frequent nose bleeds/gum bleeds. If they are related to liver disease, this is most probably because the diseased liver is unable to produce sufficient clotting factors. In this case PT and INR will be prolonged/high.

As far as the case of the OT is concerned, a high platelet count is nothing one sees too often in liver disease.

I used to have regular nose bleeds before transplant but 'touch wood' nothing since and almost 5 weeks now. My platelets were really low though about 35, they're 258 now 😋

Hi - my platelets are 60 ; have HCC from hemochromatosis - one esophageal bleed and medivac by air to South Africa from north Mozambique - how did you get your platelets up?

Hi Njovu, I had oesophageal varices which I had banded but fortunately no bleed but did have platelet transfusions x 2 prior to procedures. I didn't do anything to raise them, they've come up naturally since I had my liver transplant.

OK thats what I was looking at whether you had the transplant! - lucky you! I asked but even though I am a full UK citizen I have to live in the UK (how with leaving my work?) for 6 months - docs in SA dont give me that long

Good morning,

From most of the replies so far, it would seem that your symptom is quite common. As already said, possibly due to the clotting problems that come with liver disease, which is also why we tend to bruise very easily. The nose is very rich with its blood supply so its delicate membranes will bleed easily anyway.

Before my transplant my handkerchief was constantly bright red - but no substantial blood loss, just annoying.

However, if you are worried or it gets any worse, speak to your GP / consultant. They will be able to see your blood results and with an understanding of your overall health give the advice or treatment you need. We don't post blood results here as nobody is qualified to comment helpfully or meaningfully on how they may effect your condition.

Take care,

Jim

I had this problem pre op it's because of your liver and the clotting problems. After operation stopped altogether.

As everyone else says it's a common occurrence. My doctors would be over the moon if my platelets were as high as yours now lol but I don't get the nose bleeds as much now as I not on warfarin now, but I still have the odd one not as much as pre transplant.

Not what you're looking for?
