Muscle wasting and Prednisolone myopathy

Since my posts last week I have found on the Web that long term prednisolone can cause muscle wastage .I have AIH and could not have Azathioprine so was kept on Pred . I am now on a maintenance dose of 5mg per day but also have to take big doses for Asthma attacks.

I wonder if anyone here suffers with Prednisolone myopathy.? It doesn't sound as bad as muscle wasting caused by decompensated cirrhosis!!

I shall see my Hep on Wednesday so hope to know more then.

Koinonia are you aware there are alternative immunosuppressants to Azathioprine that might control your AIH better than the 5mg of prednisone and some people take Budesonide as an alternative to Pred as it has fewer side effects. Ask your specialist on Wednesday.

Does your doctor gave you these perscriptions as my husband has got muslcle wasting he had 13 litres of fluid out last Friday nobody as mentioned anything although it is quite obvious that he has it I feel I have to ask everything or read articles to lean anything about his disease when we see his consultant there will be a lists of questions I have gathered

Phoenixv, I'm sorry your husband is so poorly. It was my coeliac dietitian who suggested that I needed the protein supplements and talked about eating plenty of protein and carbohydrate especially before going to bed. She organised for the firm "Fresenius Kabi to send me 16 bottles of various strengths and flavours to see what I liked.(They arrived within 48 hours to my home) It was then my GP who prescribed a month's supply of the "Fresubin energy drinks"(on a repeat prescription.) I mentioned this to my Hep who thought it was a good idea. I hope you will be given a prescription to get some for your husband.
