Update on my jaundice/food poisoning

I went to the doctors yesterday and he examined stomach - no pains anywhere! He did obs and all was fine apart from temperature was a bit high, he expected I was having trouble with gallstones, but sent me off to have some emergency bloods taken, which I did yesterday afternoon.

My dr rang this morning to say the water and blood tests had showed jaundice and abnormal LFT's and he had booked me into my local hospital for more tests, I went after one today, and they did lots of blood tests, x rays etc.,

After some of the results came back the Dr. Said she thinks I have VIRAL HEPITITIS DUE TO THE FOOD POISONING, AS THE LIVER TESTS I HAD DONE THIS AFTERNOON, WAS LESS THAN YESTERDAY, SO SHE THINKS ITS WORKING ITS WAY OUT OF MY SYSTEM.

I've to go tomorrow for an ultrasound scan, and then go back on the 8 th June to have bloods taken again - but it has been a warning for me, I'm not drinking again and I'm definetly going to the Indian restaurant again !!

I hope all is well with you all and thank you for all your replies.

Sounds like Hep A or Hep E. Hep E is apparently becoming more common in the western world and yes it is self limiting. Look after yourself and you will help your liver recover by staying off alcohol :)

The blood tests should show whether you have viral hepatitis or not...it is contagious so take care around family and friends depending on which virus you have...doctor should inform you...for example, if you have HBV, anything you use , like a razor or toothbrush or preparing food without washing your hands may pass the infection on to another person who accidently uses your toothbrush or razor or eats the food you prepared. The Hepatitis B virus can live up to 7 days on any surface that is not disinfected/cleaned...it is important the doctor gives you a quick clear diagnosis.

Just a note re viral hepatitis. Its Hep C and Hep B that can be passed on through things like razors or toothbrushes as these are blood borne viruses and your blood has to come in contact with contaminated blood.

Sounds like your hepatitis has more likely come from food or water so I would not anticipate you have HCV or HBV. Hepatitis A and Hepatitis E are what are known as enteric which is a disease of the intestine, so they come from contaminated food or water and are only 'infectious' in the sense they could be passed from an infected person to another person if they ingested contaminated poo! Yours may have come from food that was handled by someone with the virus on their hands, ie they had the virus themselves and had not washed their hands properly after visiting the toilet. Sounds disgusting doesn't it but that's why hand hygiene in the food industry is so vital.

There are relatively quick blood tests that can rule out Hep C and Hep B, and blood tests that can rule in Hep A or Hep E. The blood tests look for the presence of the virus or the antibody to the virus. The length of time it takes for results to come back from a laboratory will vary, so the GP may have made an educated guess before getting the results back. Hep A and Hep E are known as self limiting, so your body will recover in time but you will always have the antibodies. You can be vaccinated against Hep A but not yet Hep E.

There are also Hep D and Hep F but for various reasons your GP will have discounted those!

Thanks for that, the Dr. Never said anything about it being contagious or anything, just said - this is what we think it is, the the bloods we're going down, so she thought it was working its way out.

I'm going back to see my own go next Thursday, then the outpatients clinic, the week after for blood tests again, I will keep in touch, many thanks for all your help.
