I love this forum.

As the wife of a husband with cirrhosis you can learn loads and you never feel alone. There is always someone in a similar situation. I cannot stress enough how important it is to give up the alcohol as soon as you have problems. My husband gave up last July and has not had one drink since and never will. However at the moment he is recovering in hospital in Inca, Majorca after having pneumonia which caused the kidneys and the bit of the liver that was working ok to fail. It is slow progress but there is progress. I am looking forward to the time when we can go home to family, friends and his wonderful consultant!!

I always think now about just how many people have got this,we here about the heart foundation, cancer, etc, but I only really know about it since my son and myself got it.

I really think we need more publicity on this, I bet there are a lot more out there that don't even now they have it.

I agree with Ruby, the problem with liver disease is it carrys a stigma with it as people tend to think its always alcohol so in effect you did it yourself, also I had Hep C and couldn't tell my mum because I remember somebody on the TV having hepititus and my mum saying that's a dirty disease, I don't remember how old I was but quite young and now I'm 48 so it's funny how things can stick in the back of your mind, I would never tell anybody not to drink as its their choice and alcohol doesn't affect everybody, I hope your husband soon is well enough to come back to blighty

I agree that alcohol is not the only cause of liver disease and it is a shame that it attracts that stigma but I do think it is important to emphasise that alcohol does not help, particularly once the liver is damaged.

I think it is a shame that the government missed the chance to go for minimum pricing, which would be a start. I also think it would be good if the public perception of alcohol could be shifted subtly by removing it from the centre of depictions of ordinary life in the media (think soaps like Corrie, East Enders, The Archers). All of these place pubs as the centre of social existence and this is far from the reality of most people's lives.

Sorry for that rant. As you may guess, I am an ex drinker and happy to be so. I am happy to see that Flowerlady's husband is also an ex drinker and I wish him a speedy recovery.

dear Flower lady my heart really really goes out to you because last october my husband was hospitalised unexpectedly during our holiday in crete for 3 weeks - he fell, he got cellulitis, then he had what I now know was an episode of hepatic encephalopathy - was admitted to hospital, diagnosed with cellulitis & pneumonia & that was the first time we also had the diagnosis of cirrhosis of the liver. In Greek, mostly. With no bedside manner; in fact with the implication that we had travelled irresponsibly (because we knew according to them he had cirrhosis, even though we didn't) And of course he was in a state hospital totally run down by all the financial cuts; patients buying loo paper water and food being the least of the problems. So I sincerely hope for you and your husbands sake that the Majorca/spain health system isn't as bad. We ended up having to discharge ourselves and fly home incognito. The consulate tried to help a bit but didn't do much.

Like you I love this forum but it only became live a few weeks before my husband died. I truly know how hard it is to stay strong in a foreign country with your best friend in hospital and if there is any further advice I can give you please please ask me, for example our holiday insurance miraculously became void...love sent across the miles xx
