Hi all, recently reached the magic 5k, had a few issues along the way but as long as I take things easy and warm up and cool down properly my body (mainly knees) seem to be able to cope👍
Anyhow it would appear the running bug has really bitten, I try and get out 2 or 3 times a week, running between 3 and 4 k and plan on doing a Parkrun or two, I've also entered the Cardiff Race for Life 5k in May, which is a fund raiser for Cancer UK, As soon as I'm more comfortable running 5k I will be taking on the 10k distance, I think my body and knees will cope just not so sure about the lungs, 😒 only one way to find out.

Congratulations on hitting that magic 5k milestone! That deserves some serious celebration. You’ve got some exciting times ahead of you. Running for a charity is a really special experience. Good luck with the training and the fundraising. Lots of run buddies on here to cheer you on. If you’re already doing parkruns, that Cardiff 5k will be an opportunity to go and enjoy yourself in the confidence that you can go the distance!
You might like to post about your race over on Fun Beyond 10k and Race Support for some pom pom waving over there too. There’s lots of lovely support available there for events of all types and you’ll notice many of the same names posting too!
🙂 there is only one way to find Beiciwr; slowly as you clearly know. I run with asthma too; I take one puff of my inhaler morning and night and, fortunately, not only have I not had a problem, I think running and swimming have improved my breathing. Long slow runs, once per week, with a couple of shorter quicker ones in between, work wonders.
I approached each milestone expecting that I would soon reach my limit (pessimistic northerner!). It might have happened now at HM, but that is definitely far enough anyway…for me.
If you take a look across onto Fun beyond 10k you will encounter the crazy gang geeing each other up for the weekend’s runs. You are welcome to drop in anytime; most of us are like you….but just a little bit further down the road.🙂
Yes, I've also been doing a fair bit of swimming and that definitely helps the breathing, luckily the fostair keeps things in check, haven't had to use my ventolin for ages, although back at the start of winter the cold air did mess things up for a week or two, and the ventolin was used a few times. I will check out the "Fun Beyond 10k"
I use Fostair too. I have never had to use ventolin since I was given Fostair 18 months ago. I haven’t really thought about asthma since.
You will have leg strength from your cycling anyway, but the need to build up and maintain that strength to cope with running greater distances, and stretching off tight muscles post run, are bigger issues beyond 10k…at least at my age. I just plan to keep going until running gives me up!
It took me about six months to get from my first 5km (with an injury) to my first 10km (without injury), and another six months to get to a half marathon distance.
Thankfully the only injuries I've had beyond my first year of running have not been due to my running technique or volume. They've been silly things like tripping over tree roots or manhole covers.
Well, so far I've run 5k twice, happily the second run was faster than the first, without going mad. Like I said earlier I won't be rushing things, I've got a couple of nice routes around some forestry the longest route is just over 5k going by my watch, but it can be easily altered to 4 and 3 k so depending on how good I feel or what time I have I can change my route without any problems, and it's literally a 2 minute drive up the road, I love running around the forestry the tracks are pretty solid and you don't usually see anyone else, and there's shelter from the worst of the weather from the trees.
