Grin and (Polar) Bear it!

It’s been a rough time in the MissU household with flu, strained intercostal muscles, unwell relatives and poorly pets. When running is your stress relief and you can’t because you’re ill, it’s not much fun! I finally got out on Sunday morning. Being a runner when you’re staying with the in-laws gives you the perfect excuse for a bit of me time without offending anyone and I’ve been slowly going insane stuck on the sofa. Packing run kit was a great decision!

Often the first run back after a break is a bit of a grind and I was prepared to have to just put one foot in front of the other not really enjoying myself very much. Sometimes it has to be done. I went out with the goal of fifteen minutely but ready to stop if necessary.

It was as expected-tough and took a while to find my stride. Even when I did, I wouldn’t say it was exactly flying along like a gazelle. That run was a “Nelly the elephant lumbering happily leaving the circus to find freedom” run. I felt lumpy and uncoordinated but it was just so nice to be out and feeling more like myself. Doing the run somewhere unfamiliar was perfect-the town had some lovely Christmas window displays, and on Sunday morning is was quiet enough to only see other runners and dog walkers instead of shoppers. Heading out of the village have some lovely views of the Malvern hills. A dead end at the bottom of a small hill was a great chance to do a really short pace pick up back up again. After a short pause to catch my breath, I headed back. Two miles and twenty minutes later, I could just start to feel my left ribs starting to grumble. That was super timing because there was a Caffè Nero in sight for a coffee to walk home with. The perfect ending! Big smile which was a huge win.

I think I’ll be limited to short runs until my injury is fully healed but it’s made a massive difference to know I can get out at all. Hooray!

The run sounds like it has really lifted your spirits. It's tough when everything seems to go pear shaped at the same time. I think I'll also be packing run kit next week visiting family in Cornwall. Mind you the grandchildren will be full on from early to late, it could prove tricky to escape for half an hour. Have a great Christmas 🎄 🥂 🎅

Thank you! It really did cheer me up. Being with grandchildren sounds like a workout in itself…albeit a lovely one! A peaceful run could be just what’s needed-good luck!

Have a wonderful time with them and a happy Christmas 🎄 ❤️

A comeback run and coffee to finish….sounds perfect to me MissU. Ribs take a few weeks to fix usually; you can’t really give them the rest they need! Onwards and upwards!!🙂

Thank you! It was just so nice to feel normal again! Especially good to end with coffee. Coffee is life! 😂

well done on your come back run. If you can see the Malverns it means two things, one it is not raining, and two you might not be too far from me!

Thank you! The in-laws are in Malvern right near Waitrose in the centre. I love visiting-it’s a lovely place. Getting up on the hills is the best. You’re totally right about the views in the rain! 😂

Sorry for this very later reply!!! A sound run...despite the initial getting into it! You have had a fair share of downs at the moment and you are right.. we sometimes need the runs most, when we are not able to do them.

But... you ran and a location that sounds lovely... with the views and the quietness. Knowing when to stop too and being careful not to push. Again easy to say, not always to do.

That first run after injury.. always a nervous moment, but it was okay and there are more short runs on the way. I too will be short running m over the next few weeks. They impact more positively than we realise.

Steady as you go and well done you xxx

Thanks so much! I think there are a lot of us with challenges at the moment and it’s so great to be able to keep each other going while the runs are on hold or gently building.

Wishing us many happy short runs! ❤️❤️❤️
