Hello Everyone and happy weekend. Today is parkrun day, a free 5K event which takes place every Saturday morning all around the world. It is for everyone, slow, fast, able, disabled, big, small and everyone in between. Oh and don't forget about the super Mum's and Dad's who push their babies in buggies. You can walk, jog, run, run/walk, it's not a race, just a run in the park and loads of us here on Bridge to 10K do it religiously every Saturday morning.
Some of us may not be able to do a parkrun at the moment so until parkrun returns fully for everyone some of us will continue to take part on our own in a Virtual parkrun every Saturday morning called a (not)parkrun. Or if you are away on Holidays, prefer to run on your own, or do not have a parkrun close by you a (not)parkrun is perfect, please feel free to join in. Please post a little run report after your parkrun or (not)parkrun and let everyone know how you got on. The little run report can be done over a post parkrun coffee and treat/cake. (parkrun is all about the after run coffee and cake, and meeting friends old and new).
If you are a new graduate and would like to start, all you have to do is run, walk or jog at a parkrun or a 5K run/jog/walk (not)parkrun anytime today or tomorrow and write a little run report under this post. It's like a little community and it is good fun, sets you up nicely for the weekend. If you want to you can register on the parkrun website and you can log your 5K (not)parkrun. In fact you can log any 5K done during the week as a (not)parkrun.
For anyone whom has not done a real parkrun yet and if it is available to you, give it a try. It is the most wonderful community event. Saturday mornings will never be the same again.
Looking forward to hearing from all of you who ran in real proper parkruns and (not)parkruns. Happy running and have a lovely weekend.

No parkrun for me today. Our home one cancelled early yesterday, followed by others nearby. Although there are lots of others in our area we turned of our alarms and wilfully missed parkrun for the first time I think. The next nearest is on but we didn't fancy the icy tarmac slopes.
So off for a walk, then a brunch - apparently we are not allowed to miss that.
So far Juniors is going ahead tomorrow. I have to go, I have the kit!
Our walk ended up being nearly as much work as a run. Our planned route was completely blocked by an icy pond. It often floods but you can usually get around the side of it. We then trudged back up the field but ending up on some really rough ground, churned up by the horses then either frozen or partly thawed and muddy. We managed a short cut back to the road and headed for a bacon butty in a community cafe before walking home along the canal.
It’s good weather for spending extra time in a nice warm bed. The beautiful thing about parkrun is that there is always next week. Enjoy juniors tomorrow morning.
I WAS going to be a marshall at Palacerigg parkrun this morning but because of heavy snow during the night that parkrun with many more in this part of Scotland were also cancelled, never mind it's quite nice looking out the window at the snow and Christmas music 🎶playing on the radio 🤶 🎄
One of the parkruns I go to was on today, Drumpellier park run, there are wonderful photos of it on their Facebook page, however, Palacerigg, the parkrun I was going to be a marshall for the first time was cancelled.
I am enjoying the snow Dexy, the weather forecast last night was for a short period of light snow but when the snow came it was heavier and lasted longer than expected.
Nice to stay warm. I did parkrun and then spent the afternoon painting the ceiling in our kitchen. I did the skirting boards etc yesterday. Tomorrow morning I will start cutting in the walls. Bad time of year to have started this project.
my watch recorded a PB today!! Not sure parkrun will tho as I was late and started running after everyone set off 😅
After a few weeks of running with my friends, I decided to go back to some parkrun tourism and came to Highbury Fields. The first parkrun I’ve done that’s 5 laps.
It was super busy. Not sure if it’s normally like this or because some nearby parkruns were cancelled this week due to frost/icy paths, but it was still very enjoyable (especially when I finished and realised I had a PB!!)
No PR for me either. We’ve had a full on few days, culminating in our work Christmas party yesterday. 🎉 Also, course checks are done too late for me to make a last minute decision which of our local PRs would have been safe enough to go to.
I chose a low key morning instead and took Flossie out on the common for a slow, relaxed, very frosty (not) PR. I felt righteous, Flossie had a wonderful time. Job done. 😇
I did a not do parkrun today. I will try another parkrun soon, but I have a problem with doing them. I get so excited/anxious that my heart rate goes through the roof! I guess the answer is just do one every week and I’ll get used to them. Also, I’m doing a training plan at the moment and am only supposed to push myself while doing interval work.
So my run today was a 45 minute slower run in the lower effort zones. Trouble is, it was so cold that I was running a bit faster to keep warm! I never even took my jacket off. I noticed that at the end of the 35 minute Zone 2 section, I was close to 5K - so I stepped on it a bit for a couple of minutes 😊. Got to 5K and then slowed down to the right zone for the last 3 minutes of the run.
So Strava gave my 5K time at 42:26, which is pretty good for me 🐌 for what was mostly an easy-ish run. Happy with my training plan and today’s cheeky run 😊.
Very well done Jools on your 5K run and don’t worry. You’re welcome to join in and share your runs and progress with us every week. We celebrate parkrun and (not)parkrun. You did a fantastic (not)parkrun .
My last run of any kind was Kapiti Parkrun with lexi6 2 weeks ago and we arrived back to a freezing UK on Tuesday after a night out in 30c Singapore on Monday. A bit of a shock to the system! Anyway, I was determined to start to get back into some sort of routine, so, despite thick freezing fog and -3c, I wrapped up warm and set off for Yarborough since Market Rasen was cancelled yesterday due to ice on the course. As I arrived, people were returning to their cars - cancelled! At that point it was too late to try to get anywhere else so I came home, had my shower and a bacon buttie and I’ll try again next week 🤞🏻 I hope everybody who did manage it has thawed out!
It’s a shame but RDs will only cancel if absolutely necessary. We had lots of volunteers not turn up this morning which could have cancelled it if the regulars hadn’t stepped in again.
I couldn’t run this week (Doctor’s orders) and was going to have a quiet morning at home. But I felt so sorry for our RD when volunteers weren’t forthcoming so I offered to do number checker. Then some volunteers didn’t turn up, so I ended up being turn 2 cone marshal and then finish tokens. Shame about finish tokens is you can’t wear gloves. 🥶. Thawed out over breakfast and cappuccino.
That's bad for volunteers not to turn up if the parkrun is on, the parkrun I was going to be a volunteer marshall was cancelled because of heavy snow, the RD e mailed me to say it was off, still bad for volunteers not to turn up if the parkrun is not cancelled.
You never know what is happening in people’s lives to make them have to bail out Al, but it is usually something more urgent than parkrun. Most do let the RD know as soon as they can.
That’s why I wanted to do number checker JonathanP - at least I get to move back and fore. But in the end I did Marshal, finish tokens and barcode scanning in one day,. The cold affected the phone batteries today so I did a few of the last runners. Oh and then finished the token sorting at home!
Good afternoon Damien and fellow parkrunners (even if your local one was cancelled today).
My usual one was cancelled, as were a few around it. However I'm in Wales this weekend, so I chanced it and set off for Hafan Pwllheli this morning.
Apparently it was touch-and-go whether it would go ahead, not because of the weather, but because of a shortage of volunteers. Two regular volunteers were away.
Twenty two of us (plus volunteers) stood shivering in the light wind on a near freezing temperature beach at 8.55am this morning. There was a minimum of introductions (we had no parkrun newbies) we were off.
The sand was firm, with a thin crust of ice in places. The sea was calm at the start and a little more active by the turnaround point 2.5km away. I asked the turnaround marshal if he had a hot toddy, brandy or mulled wine. He said no, but it would have been a good idea.
I deliberately kept the first half slower so that I would be able to last the distance. And it worked: I ran the whole thing without pausing (except for a few seconds at the turnaround).
Naturally, few people wished to hang around at the end. I chatted for about ten minutes, went back to the car, changed a few outer layers and had some coffee from a vacuum flask. About fifteen minutes after I'd left it started raining.
It’s such a shame when you don’t get enough volunteers, but it is understandable with such a small parkrun nowster . We have around 400 local runners so I think it’s quite sad that we struggle with a shortage of volunteers here. There are many people who run every week but have never volunteered.
Southampton parkrun was still on so off I went in the -1 degree temperature 🥶. Arrived early enough to have a fairly decent warm-up. I somehow got a PB of 28:55 (official time) which I put down to wanting to finish and get home to the warmth 🤣. A smaller field of ‘only’ 715 probably helped too as there was less congestion than usual. I think my legs are going to hurt tomorrow though 🤣
It was -2° at Portsmouth Lakeside this morning - no splashing through the puddles as they were frozen. Decided to take it easy given the conditions and had to stop to retie a lace - that'll be trying to tie a bow with gloves on! Came in at 34.07 alongside another 223 hardy souls.
I chanced my arm this morning and went to my local parkrun with my doggie Ruby. There was a very heavy frost on the ground and it was -3 degrees. Thankfully parkrun was not cancelled and 50 hardy souls turned up to run, jog and walk. It was slippery in spots and we were briefed to take it easy. That was easy for me as all I can do at the moment is take it easy. Ruby and I ran it all, no walking breaks, slow but delighted with a finish time of 35:46. I felt comfortable and enjoyed the run. We didn’t hang around too long and went home to start painting the kitchen.
Parkruns suspended in France for over a year as you need a medical certificate blog.parkrun.com/fr/2022/12... 😩 Fortunately we have a (non)parkrun group which still runs the same parkrun course every Sat and the group signed up to run the escalade.ch - over 53000 running this weekend through the old streets of Geneva - amazing race with 1000's of supporters cheering you on and music playing along the course. You don't even need a medical certificate to run in Switzerland 😊
Alarm set and hopped up looking forward to ParkRun. Freezing fog, uh oh! Extra layers, gloves, scrape the car and off I went. I forgot my barcode 😳, I forgot my drink 😳 but too late to go back. It was freezing but there was a good crowd. Down onto the pebbles for the start, they were frozen, good, much firmer underfoot. There were elbows flying as we struggled with the uneven surface but up onto the esplanade and settled into a rhythm. Very odd thought process, it was so cold I seriously thought about going home, no barcode, who would ever know - me. Just keep running, the fog did not lift for a minute, hair and hats had frost, marshals were frozen but encouraged every one of us. And then it was done and in a sensible time I think, no barcode. Back to the car and those extra layers, on the drive home, I drove out of the edge of the fog and into bright sunshine, blue skies and autumn colours, it was a beautiful day
I did my 42nd parkrun yesterday. It was freezing, but I carried on. Today is my parkrun one year birthday, so I celebrated by marshalling at the Santa Fun run for our local branch of Mencap. Loved it!
Hi Damien, not been on the forum for a few weeks, been having a few health problems, but hopefully on the recovery road now. Have still been trying to do Parkrun just to try and keep up my fitness. Anyway yesterday was my 100th Parkrun, and although it was very very cold and very icy, it was decided to go ahead, with a warning to' be steady as its not a race!' So I ran round with a running buddy, and just enjoyed the bracing air! Just never thought when I did my first Parkrun in July 2021, that I'd be addicted from day 1!😀
Great photo and huge congratulations to you on your 100th parkrun. It’s a great achievement and milestone. I hope you continue to recover well and get back to full health soon.
