HR low run

Went out this morning for an 80 min run. Nothing special about that except this run was the slowest run I have ever done covering 8.67k in 80 mins. The idea was to see if I could keep my HR at a sensible level as doing the calculations at 76 you seem to run out of Heart Rate headroom. The target set was no more than 135 bpm. The result after 80 mins was 127 bpm average but to be fair I had to run at a snails pace of plus 9 mins ish per k and stop at times to get my HR down. An interesting run that was not easy but according to the pundits should improve my running. I wonder if anyone else in the group has tried low HR running?

Ah hamit, what to say? I really like your idea of slow running to keep the heart rate down and am pleased it seems to be working for you! My only trouble is that my pace is already at least 10 minutes per km and I don’t know that I can run any slower! But I’ll give it a try and see what happens!

Thanks Oldgirlruns,

Well not my idea but have been reading up on it. Problem is that the calculations for the HR target seem to be aimed at the younger runner. For my part I looked at my HR track from my watch and made a guess on 135 as a value well below my lactate threshold, the HR zone where you are starting to empty your tank. Give it a try, let me know how you get on.

Thanks for reply. So what's the low down, does it work? Pros and Cons, I would be interested in your experience.
