I used to regard swimming as something restful to do on non-running days.
Recently, I’ve been monitoring heart rate and calories burnt on the Cardio program on my Garmin 45. It turns out that my 1000m swims use as many calories and keep an average heart rate above those of a Parkrun.
So good exercise and not so “restful” after all. I just need something to make all those lengths less tedious!

I joined a swimming group years ago. We have a coach who has us swimming different strokes each week (butterfly has become a bit of a challenge!) and throws in a bit of diving and various exercise drills. I find it much more stimulating that swimming up and down and we have a laugh at the same time. I probably burn fewer calories than I would with a straight swim, but my laughter muscles get a good work out!
That sounds good fun B66. It’s strictly lanes only when I go but I might try strokes other than crawl or breaststroke. I’m usually all over the place with backstroke but haven’t really tried butterfly.
Butterfly is a major effort, for me anyway. Back stroke is a doddle. You can breathe when you choose and keeping straight (ish) is just a matter of following a line on the ceiling. Have fun !! 🏊♂️
