Hello Everyone,

We are going into week 7 now. I ran 2 x 5K runs last week and 1 x 5.5K run. Not fast, around a 6:50 min/km pace but I'm happy to be running it all. How is everyone getting on? This week we will be on week 2 of moving across the Bridge.

I have found that a nice way to build up distance is at a nice easy steady pace. So pick a pace which is comfortable for you over 5K and stick with that and even go a little slower if you want. This week we will do 2 x 5K runs and a longer run which we will increase by just 500 meters, so a 6.0K run. Each week we will add on some extra distance to a long run, keeping the other two runs at 5K. Feel free to run your 5k at race pace, intervals or just relax and enjoy them at a nice easy pace.

So far in our gang we have, Devon_Straggler, Saratamsin, Raisemeup, DylanTheRabbit, Lablove, Kirst13, Tansycat, Foxile, MamaKeeves, Sammy_Lou, Popstess, Oldgirlruns, UnfitNoMore, Sueken, Joggingonthewildside, Tetleyteagirl, ThisGirlNowRuns, Knitruntalk, Howie1210, Meanmommab, Comaltdel, Tofino, kjm20, 51mc, berrinio, Tabbles

If I am missing anyone let me know. Also if any one would like to join in please let me know. All welcome. Have a good week everyone.

Damien

Hi gang, well done Damien :) I’ve had a migraine for a few days so didn’t manage to get out for the 5.5 K run yet so I’ll be a little behind but will try and catch up

Sorry to hear that berrinio but there’s no rush and we’ll look out for you! Hope you’re feeling better soon!

Ah hope your Migraine disappears very soon. Don’t worry you will easily catch up.

Update: just did it, 5.5 km at a very gentle 8m/km jog in the dark (much cooler now, phew). Ready to do this week’s three runs 👍

Hi Damien, I’m hoping to get out early tomorrow to have a crack at my 6k - it’s far too hot for me later in the day! And we haven’t had to say that too often this summer!

AlMorr profile image

Good luck to you Oldgirlruns for running your 6K tomorrow, as far as the weather, well, Ireland and Scotland have had a really good summer, I know it's been a bit topsy turvy with the north sunnier and warmer than the south, in fact, The Isle of Wight has had one of its wettest summers ever, once again good luck for your 6K run and your quest to run 10K on Damien's Bridge.

Thanks Al, you’re right - if it’s lovely in Scotland it’s often gritty down here and vice versa!

Good luck with your 6K run tomorrow. I am away with work and staying in Galway. It is beautiful here this week so I think I might do my 6K later after after work. A run along Salthill prom is just what the doctor ordered.

Oooo…lovely!

A run along Salthill prom sound wonderful. I started early this week with a 5k run on Sunday and a very warm 6k yesterday. I started later than usual - 9.15 and got very hot but it was fairly comfortable at my slow speed.

I'm away next week so will probably fall behind but I'll take my running shoes and see what happens. Happy running to all in the gang.

Very well done on your 6K run. It was 27.5 degrees C when I did my run yesterday evening.

Good running Damien, I'm waiting for cooler weather here in North Kent, 30 degrees predicted and not used to the sudden heat after a poor summer! I'll be aiming for a 5k and a bit more if I feel I can.

Best wishes ☺️ to all.

Best of luck. It was warm when I did my run yesterday evening, about 27.5 degrees C. Took me ages to cool down afterwards.

Sounds good! Work has been full on here and weather a bit hot 🌞 on nights this week so only getting one 5k run in. Bit of catching up to do but I’ll get there. Good work everyone!

Yes it’s warm, but very soon it will be winter running. Enjoy the nice weather whilst it’s with us.

Just a 5k logged so far. Been far too tired with nursing a poorly cat and keeping her under room arrest and in the cone! Maybe next week🤞

Don’t worry. You’ll catch up again. Hope your cat feels better soon.

Hey gang! I am really struggling to get my runs in on the regular. I managed a 25 minute run last Friday covering 4.4kms and a 34 min 38 on Sunday covering 5km. It's back to the same old same old I hate running on my own and find it really hard to motivate myself to get out when no one is free to run with me. I've not ran 3 times a week in ages, only managing once or twice a week at the moment

berrinio profile image
berrinioGraduate10 in reply to Popstess

Sounds like you’re doing really well! I’m the same - it’s a long time since I regularly ran three times a week. I’m thinking this little running gang will add some motivation. Good luck this week :)

damienair profile image
damienairAdministrator in reply to Popstess

Yeah, don’t be too hard on yourself. I’m only starting to get back to 3 time per week now. I find parkrun is a great way to stay motivated. At parkrun on a Saturday morning you run with others at a community event, then having an official 5K time to try and improve upon gives me the motivation to run and train during the week. Just keep running.

Dropped my husband off at the garage this morning and decided I’d run home. I measured out the distance 5.41k. I thought ‘that’s ok, I’ve done that before’ nice run along the coast I thought. There was no nice about it!! My legs felt like lead I had to walk 3 times and was so slow snails were overtaking me. Not my best run ever. Made it to the end in 54 minutes. Think I might need to lie down for a bit.

damienair profile image
damienairAdministrator in reply to Lablove

Well done. Every run makes you stronger. Especially the really tough ones.

I have to confess… I’m really struggling to get over the 5k

I’m beginning to realise that in my head , its about finding time. I’m always running ( pardon pun) around doing other stuff and really struggling to find more than 30/40 mins

Yes, I know, it’s an excuse. Much better with my new running buddy but she’s been away

damienair profile image
damienairAdministrator in reply to Tansycat

Don’t worry about it. Once your still running that is all that matters. When you find the time try again.

I've been having a little rest at the start of the week, so I've skipped one of my two runs per week. I did my epic all day bike ride on Saturday, my poor little legs felt weak for a couple of days after.

My "long" run is imminent. I'm feeling good, so I think I may as well add 5 minutes and see how it goes. That would make it 55minutes.

Good luck with your run.

Well I managed a slow 6km this morning which was a bit cooler than it has been of late. It took me 1:06 (that’s 1hr not 1min🤣; well I said it was slow!). And my apologies to anyone I know who might have seen me because it certainly wasn’t pretty to look at! Trouble is I’ve pulled my thigh again, the same one which put me out of action earlier in the year, so I’m trying not to aggravate it; I may just stick with 2 runs a week and see how it goes. And of course get back on the exercises given to me by the physio the last time! I took my music on shuffle today and sped up a bit (a relative term!) in the last km with the help of some bangers from Chris Rea and a couple of nippy numbers by Frances Black and then Chris Newman and Marie Ni Chathasaigh. Happy 6km running, Bridge gang!

Well done on your 6K, wishing you of course a niggle free thigh as quickly as possible.

Well I did my 55 minutes, but it wasn't my longest run! To be fair it was pretty dark and where I run quite a bit is rough grass, uneven with the odd foot size hole. I think I might have to look for smoother ground in the dark. It was a bit stressful and although the surroundings are lovely round there, I had to put all my focus on the ground just ahead. Loads of moths and bats about. Very noisy geese getting ready to sleep and little green reflective sparkles on the ground, which turned out to be spider's eyes in my head torch light.

That sounds kind of exciting.

Sorry everyone I’ve been deviating from the plan as my race is next weekend - eek! I managed a full 10k at the end of last week, lots of jeffing, but managed to get round. Then had a potential crisis - on Monday I was exploring a castle and my quad went ping! So had a few days rest, then luckily managed another 10k yesterday, lots more jeffing but no pain fortunately😊 Had a slow but steady parkrun this morning, and I am now “tapering”, so I’m just planning a couple gentle 5ks this week, before the big day next Sunday. My race number came in the post today to add to the excitement😁
