No motivation

I am really struggling to get the motivation to go running at the moment.

I'm still working and when I get home at 5 , the life seems to have been sucked out of me.

I was considering getting up early at around 5 to do a daily run but I just can't find the energy.

I feel drained in more ways than one.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

That’s tough. I don’t know what your work/home situation is within the context of lockdown. These are tough times. I think a huge swathe of the population are finding themselves fatigued. I guess the worry and stress gets to us and drains us.

What I would say is... we know how cathartic running can be. It might be that you get out running and burst into tears, or struggle. Then there will be moments of reliving the struggles of when we first started, remembering how we overcame the mental hurdles. Those lessons have been learnt the hard way, and we retain the ‘muscle memory’ of them. Then there is the release and moment of feel-good afterwards. It may disperse, but it can be tapped into again and again.

We know we feel better when we run. Even if it’s just a little bit better. You can do this.

My suggestion is that running always makes one feel better, and gives us a focus. If you are currently physically rather than mentally tired, just a short outing may be in order. If however you are just struggling to get out, then its just a case of deciding what you want, setting yourself a plan that fits in with your life, and then going out of the door to run unless you are are unwell or it isnt safe to do so. Good luck with it :)

Feel for you! Life can seem very blah at times! Pick 3 alternate days & stick to them like glue! Put your kit out the night before, make sure you are hydrating well (also helps with fatigue) make a new fun playlist. On run days just roll out of bed into kit, warm up and go. Run for 2or3 K whatever is an enjoyable level for your current fitness to start with. Don’t overthink it.. on run days just run!! The happy hormones will soon come back! Let us know how you get on! We all have these times. Running is a wonderful gift in these days of lockdown .... unwrap it again 🎁

I predominantly run in the evenings when I'm working. I prefer it as during the day I can hydrate and make sure I eat lunch then a small snack mid afternoon so I'm fuelled for a run. The only motivation is really to do it for yourself. The physical and mental benefits are fantastic. I always think if I'm able enough to run then I really should because so many people would love to but can't.

Plan to go straight for a run as soon as you get in. Reinforce it all day at work and when you get home, don't stop, just get changed and go. Hardest part is getting out the door. But you know that already.
