Hi Marvo, I suspect this our friend the computer algorithm kicking in. 😠 The various apps I think include different assumptions as to time and distance covered, and who knows, the number of unicorns and earthquakes that occurred during the run etc. 🙂
Like you, I would always choose the best in the circumstances! 😀
I just use Strava* as my one version of the truth so there’s no dispute within my own psyche!
* Other apps are available 🙂👍
Whatever you use, you’re running and don’t need all the tech to tell you that. A look in the mirror will show you you’re doing so well. 😃
Strava tends to round so if you do say 5.06km at 5:30 per km it will show as 5km at 5:30 which isn't quite correct. But if you go to the detailed view it will show 5.06. Though sometimes 10km in garmin becomes 9.99 in strava annoyingly which then shows as 9.9.
As Garmin is the source, only that can be considered to be correct albeit not necessarily the truth
Ha no I meant I’ll go with Garmin as Strava rounds down! Also if you run dead on 10K Strava doesn’t always recognise it - so you have to run on just after 10K. HoagyM will back me on this! 😊
Pretty annoying - would be good if they all just reported on the unadulterated source data! I get on my soapbox about this stuff as I'm a data management professional - so whilst this boring and seemingly trivial problem is just an anecdote to most, that's my life!
I'm not much fun at parties! Prefer to tell people I'm Red 1. !
Haha - i'm a wannabe data management professional. Or data scientist. Or...I don't know, I just like data and I like it either to be right or at the least, well documented ...
This happened to me on my run on Sunday, and it's not the first time either—my Garmin said 20.1km at the end, Strava (which I run concurrently for the map and delete once I'm done) said 25.6km. Now I can understand a bit of a difference in how the data is used and having a margin of error with the algorithms as a result of rounding, but over 5k difference?! And then to further complicate matters when the Garmin data uploaded automatically to Strava it said 23.5km or so despite being from the same source. This is the one I'm inclined to believe as it is about what I measured my route to be, and doesn't include the whistlestop pause at Tesco for water, but it's a bit frustrating that it's so wildly inconsistent beyond a bit of rounding up and down. Particularly as the Garmin data that I use as my base level is so conservative ☹️
I feel your frustration matt. I have strava, Runkeeper, my fitness pal, my Fitbit all running giving me different outcomes 😳 I'm believing strava and Fitbit more than the others. Or more like I'm liking the outcomes better 😉😊🏃🏃♀️😁
I was very surprised to see the massive discrepancy when I was using google fit and then exporting and importing into MapMyRun. I didn't understand what it was doing given the whole route was exported so why it calculated such a different distance - to the point where my pace looked as if it was about 2 min faster - I was confused!
