Well, I am in couch to 5k+ after my son booted me off the couch and into running shoes, saying "EVERYONE can do it," (even though I'm 70,) and now this same son is telling me HE can't run because he has sore tendons or something or other that "just won't get well" in spite of getting some shoe/insert advice from some voluntary sport physical therapist or someone and resting for a week. I feel abandoned! He got me up and dragged me through this and I like it now and he's stopped and seemingly given up.... : ( Ideas, anyone?
Abandoned?: Well, I am in couch to 5k+ after... - Bridge to 10K
Abandoned?
They are tricky these youngsters!
My daughter and Son in Law started me with the running idea.. then I was abandoned too !!!! Something to do with daughter's feet!
I liked the running idea and started then myself... Who needs them...( for running anyway)
You keep going... we are all here with you... loads of us seasoned runners.. I began and graduated at 65...now still here 67!
Loads of support and encouragement.. have you finished the programme... or where are you on it?
Hi, Oldfloss! Thanks for your encouragement! I have finished couch to 5k and am working on couch to 5k+. I've tried to get others interested but I get replies like, "I can't--my hip..." etc. Interestingly, I notice MY hip doesn't seem to hurt any more.... nor my feet or knees.... I have to drive to a location to run due to my local environment/situation and I am the sort of person who likes someone along the drive for company. Once I get there, I have no problem heading out running on my own.... However, I'd like my son to stay healthy for his life and it's disappointing to me that he seems to be giving up.
I loved the C25K+ podcasts... I just moved slowly onward and eventually made 10K...I am a solo runner... but can understand you liking company on the drive in to your runs... Where are you in the UK?
My daughter, little Mama, has started running again when she gets chance... usually early mornings...her new baby is a Velcro baby and very full on..... son in law also is beginning to get out there again, when baby permits!!...they encouraged me all the way and they are pretty fit anyway... It is such an important thing... and wanting to stay healthy and as fit as we are able to be should be a priority.
Keep posting on here anyway... does he maybe fancy the Walking for Health forum???
Oh! Thanks for the "Walking for Health" forum tip. Maybe he might do that--however, he liked running to begin with because it lifted his mood. I like running for the same reason plus I feel better physically--aches and pains banished! Yesterday I was coming out of a store and rain started furiously pelting down; I was able to RUN to my car--a great feeling! Actually, I'm in the U.S. in the state of Michigan near the city of Grand Rapids. We live in the country--no paths like you have and no sidewalks so I go to our local YMCA where there's a track. Also, where I live, there are irritating (biting) deer flies, mosquitoes, and stinging wasps. Most people seem to be immune, but they seem to like stinging and biting me! The temperature is in the 60's here today and if I had a little company, it might be a great day to go to a park closer to town to run (few if any bugs there.) The temperature is unusual for us--it's been in the 80's--way too hot and muggy for running but today would be great. I'm planning on day 3 of Stepping Stone today.
It sounds exciting and scary! I run fields and tracks but no scary things really...
It is a great forum and has the same format and challenges..
The running for your car, it is a great feeling.... I love it when I say.. oh it's only a couple of miles.. I'll run there
Stepping Stone..hmmm I found it so funny.. ended up doing a sort of soft shoe shuffle! Love Speed and Stamina though... I think you will too!
Ah, yes--I was out of breath with my first attempt at Stepping Stone--trying to make little minced steps in order to step to every "1.. 2.. 3.. 4.." that Laura voiced. I was not a fan of the music either--maybe others are.... I will try the Speed and/or Stamina next week. In the meantime, I'm trying to gather some running music. My local library provides free, limited access at freegal.com.
I don't mind running on my own, I actually prefer it. I do run with a group most weeks and that is handy through the winter and dark nights, when we all don our Run head torches 🙂
You will be fine! If you have Stepping Stones you don't need anything else
Stamina has a five minute quick section at the end. Sheesh 😁
Two separate things going on here - your running, and your concern for your son... don't mix 'em up!
Your posts are such a useful reminder of how privileged we are in the UK with our (hard won) public access to the countryside.
Yes, your access to the countryside is wonderful as well as fascinating to me; you are so lucky! How did it come about? I am ignorant on that.
In England at least the Mass Trespass on Kinder Scout in the Peak District in 1932 is often taken to be the key event.
Googleme, that is VERY interesting. I did not know about that. I looked in Wikipedia and learned that in northern Europe, roaming is considered a centuries old right. In the U.S., we have more recently been able to take paths, usually paved, over old railroad tracks. There is a path across the "mitten" of Michigan from one great lake to the other, for example. These paths are supported by the public or interested groups. There are paths in my area, as well, but I would have to drive a little bit to get to them. Where I live there are only roads. One can walk or bike on them, but every now and then someone gets hit by a vehicle with bad results sometimes. (A couple of people on bikes were killed here in the last two weeks in separate incidents.) Thank you very much for educating me on the history!
At age 70, I have only recently discovered that I really need to take closer attention to the path ahead of me - have not run for 9 weeks now and probably not for another month or so. I might attempt to walk a parkrun next week. This is a big let down to me after I managed to finish my last HM in April in 2 hours 23 minutes. I think that may remain as my PB!
Can anybody guess where I might have fallen here?? goo.gl/GDzbq8
Congratulations at finally getting off the couch -- now the hardest bit is to avod going back to it . But it can be done!!
