Should I be concerned?

17 years ago I had a cancerous lump removed from my left breast and was then given chemo and radio therapy. Everything seemed to have gone to plan. I have not had a mammogram for at least 10 years and all seemed fine. Since about 3 weeks ago I have noticed an odd pain in that same breast, which seems to come and go, mostly on touch. It feels almost like a nerve pain but it feels deeper than just on the skin. I cannot feel a lump and I cannot bring the pain on; it just happens several time a day. I doubt that a physical examination would reveal anything as the pain comes on sporadically. Any suggestions?

An ultrasound scan might be a good idea just to put your mind at ease and rule out anything sinister. I suggest a visit to your GP too. I hope there is nothing nasty there. Good luck. Lainey

Thanks Lainey66. I may do just that. I just did't like to come across as a hypocondriac, having had a number of problems during this last year while in the past I have not needed a doctor for two years or more on a stretch. Best wishes!

You mustn’t worry about appearing like a hypochondriac. I think our diagnosis make us ultra careful when it comes to anything now. I contact my gp the min I have a concern. I’m fighting a nasty chest infection at the moment, but it has had me thinking “oh God what if it’s gone to my lungs?” and I get headaches from coughing so much and nearly convince myself it’s attacking my brain. It’s one of the cruel sides of having had to deal with cancer. You just look after yourself and never be worried about having to go to gp etc xxx

Thank you so much. I feel for you, Lainey66. You have so much more to worry about than I have. I am not really a "what if" person and count myself lucky not having to take any medication (apart from having eye injections) I hope all goes well for you. Take care and best wishes!

It's better to get it checked out, and be told, hopefully, it's nothing serious and easily resolved for you, good luck x

10 years ago doesn’t make you a hypercondriac, regardless of any other issues you may have,PLEASE go and get it checked, for your own peace of mind, hopefully it’s nothing, and then you’ll feel better.If it does turn out to be nasty, getting to it early is your best option,(but you know that)

Thank you for that. I will take your, and the other kind people's, advice onboard. My reluctance was probably due to having paid 20 visits in the last 15 months at our hospital due to a severe eye condition, all by appointment and not because I thought that something was wrong. I know this is a different worry and a different department. I will see my GP as soon as possible. Again, thank you.

Could it possibly be scar tissue pain? Go and get it checked x

I had intermittent pain in my 'other' breast (the one that wasn't affected by the BC) and in the end got fed up with it and opted for a prophylactic mastectomy. The tissue was thoroughly examined and was clear of cancer. Remember BC is usually painless and that many other things could be causing this. But get it checked out anyway. Best of luck.
