Mastectomy and Covid

Mastectomy and Covid! I had my mastectomy last Tuesday 20th September. My partner tested positive for Covid on Wednesday the 21st, followed by myself my daughter and my son-in-law.

Anyway we are battling through. One issue is I am wearing a pico unit. This is due to be checked and/or changed tomorrow. So waiting on the Breast nurses to tell me what has to happen.

We have avoided Covid all this time. You really couldn’t make this up could you!

But the Breast care team were absolutely fabulous, from start to finish.

well, done on getting through the op! I don’t know what à pico unit is. Is it a drain from the wound? If so, in my case a nurse came daily to check it and check me. Very helpful.

hi pico us a little battery powered unit that promotes healing by applying pressure to the wound. It is attached to a special dressing. Removed it myself today with instructions from a lovely nurse over zoom!

No drains used here - not sure if that’s a UK thing? Body will absorb the fluid.

I’d never heard of it either! But apparently it helps healing buy ensuring the blood doesn’t pool anywhere. Saying that, I was “bruised” all over the right side and when the surgeon examined me ten days after the op he said “oh!who did that to you then? “. Laugh. I bruise easily. Familial thing.

Your “pico” sounds like fun???

Hi, I’ve got used to it really. Just connected to my top. It buzzed away occasionally. The reason they gave me was because I have previously had radiotherapy, which can slow at the healing process. I had to remove the dressing myself due to getting Covid, and I’m going back next week to have the Steri-Strips removed by the nurse
