not sure what to do - Factor V Leiden & Pregnancy

Hey all.

I have been searching online for answers to this question, so i thought I would check to see if anyone had any answers on here.

I have factor V Leiden, and recently found out I was pregnant - not entirely sure what I'm going to do yet, but I can't find any information about the effects of factor V leiden on either pregnancy/terminations - so I thought I would see on here!

If any of you have any experiences etc, that would be great!

Hi there

You would need to know what genes you are carrying. Women carrying two genes for Factor V Leiden will need to receive treatment with a heparin anticoagulant medicine during pregnancy. The same applies to women carrying just one gene for Factor V Leiden who have previously had a blood clot themselves or who have a family history of blood clots. All women carrying a gene for Factor V Leiden may need to wear special stockings to prevent clots during the last half of pregnancy. After the birth of the child they may be prescribed the anticoagulant drug heparin.

If you want to end the pregnancy with an abortion, you can be treated, but again it would depend where you get treated on whether your are needing anti-coagulant therapy or not. It may be best either way to have a chat with your specialist or GP to explore your options further.
