Hi new member took alot for me to join.
Sorry to hear about the fractures. It must be hard to stay mobile and active with painful ankles. Are you on osteoporosis medication? Did they run tests to check for any underlying causes?
I am taking alendronic acid which has a lot of side effects and needs dental supervision I had to push for a dexa scan after doing some reading.
What were your t-scores?
Hi my t-score -2.8 lumbar hip-2.5 do you have osteoporosis.
Yes, I was diagnosed 10 years ago. I don't take any medication, but haven't had any fragility fractures. I posted recently about my latest REMS scan results (REMS is a private alternative to DEXA, uses ultrasound rather than x-ray). I've kept my bone density stable for the last 5 years.
That's good been a rough road for me I was in hospital 2 weeks, found out 6 months later they knew I had osteoporosis and said nothing. I had to see occupational health at work he told me I should have been put on medication. So I pushed my Doctor for a Dexa was persistent till I got one, and finally medication.
Your scores aren't that bad. Have they run blood tests to check for causes?
I would recommend going back and asking for parathyroid, vitamin D and calcium to be checked in the same blood draw, plus coeliac, thyroid and a full blood count. Hyperparathyroidism is a fairly common cause of osteoporosis (because it takes calcium from the bones) and can occur with normal blood calcium levels, but doctors often fail to test for it. Two people in my osteoporosis support group have recently been diagnosed with it after specifically requesting the blood test.

Hi just wanted to sympathise over the broken ankles . I am currently nearly recovered from one ,it's slow and painful, but I'm getting there. I have had good physio advice and have an ankle brace to support if doing a longer walk on uneven ground. Anyway hope you are well into recovery ,your fractures sound worse than mine
