indigestion relief

ChocolateFlowers profile image

Hello all.

Could I ask what indigestion relief people use as the doc had mum on omeprazole, until I read into it and took her off it. Even eating 3 hours or more before bed, she still gets indigestion / heartburn (a sour taste as she puts it), not sure if it’s the Teriparatide but I’d like to reduce that symptoms.

Many thanks in advance

Ginger tablets work for me to ease indigestion. Ginger is a natural product, which has been used for centuries to help with nausea and indigestion - but it is also a blood thinner - so if your mother is taking other blood thinners she should check with her doctor before using ginger.

apparently Famotodine is not as bad as Omeprozole for Osteoporosis people. However, I think that might be because less research has been done on Famotodine…..

Liquorice DLG Chewable is very good, but only if you don’t suffer from high blood pressure. I was told about this licorice by someone in the medical profession. It works just as well as an omeprazole. My experiences it does coat the esophagus nicely a neutralizes some of the acid in the stomach, so makes you feel better….. You can buy it at Holland and Barrett.

Hi coming off any PPI drug for reflux is a nightmare if they have been taken for a long time. You seem to get some sort of rebound effect meaning symptoms are even worse than before treatment! My experience of coming off Lanzoprazole has been awful. I had been prescribed Lanzoprazole for reflux caused by a hiatus hernia quite a few years ago. Initially I really thought I wouldn’t be able to cope with the acid production again as everything I ate just made the acid worse. I was continually sucking over the counter Rennies or Bisodol. After months of symptoms it finally calmed down. It’s by no means perfect but most of the time I can put up with symptoms as they happen. I occasionally have to take a Lanzoprazole if symptoms flare though. I read about a device called IQoro and using this has helped me. I cope on a daily basis by not eating for 4 hours before bedtime. I only eat small meals and know what foods trigger my acid. I manage with antacid tablets as mentioned and always take two spoonfuls of Gaviscon Advance before bed. If you can elevate your mums bed head that would help too. I have to say though that reflux makes you miserable and you’re lucky if you can get symptoms totally under control. I haven’t managed it yet being largely off PPI for 18 months. Having said all this some doctors still think that protecting the oesophagus is more important than any possible long term damage to bone health. I think the debate around PPI medication use is still ongoing. My Metabolic Bone consultant has told me in his opinion they are bad for bones. I don’t know how old your mum is but I think it may be worth getting advice from your health care provider as it may not be the best for her at this stage in life to come off omeperazole? Wishing you and her the very best.

She could try changing her diet.It worked for me.Dr.LoiuseKaufmans book Acid Reflux Diet is a great resource. She's a renowned expert.

I have been on the above diet and a combination of the 28 Day Acid Reflux Diet and there is no way I can come of Omeprazole. The rebound is so bad. The only diet that works for me is a banana and yogurt 4 times a day and that is not good for my bone health or my weight. I am 78. I have decided to keep to the diet as much as possible and cope with the minimum of PPI's. We all have to balance our life and choices. Having constant reflux is debilitating and really bad for the body.

She could try Apple Cider Vinegar 10 minutes before her dinner

Vinegar is an acid and acid causes reflux.

Nope. Please do not by the word "Acid". Interestingly, apple cider vinegar is a popular natural remedy for acid reflux and heartburn.

thank you everyone. Mum is 81 so changing things like her diet are out of the question as she is quite fussy. At 81 the doctors are not interested in that much but I shall check with them re the liquorice (I think she would be fine but I’m not a doc) and will try the other remedies that I can get myself. Again, thank you all for your time 😄

I have a pitcher that produces alkaline water. I use that water to make my coffee and tea to reduce acid. If you drink 6 ounces 2 hours after eating it will reduce indigestion.

I used to take Gaviscon, but recently discovered ‘GaviNatura’ available at Boots. 100% natural, protects the stomach, neutralizes acid and prevents irritation. It works well for me. I’ve also found the worst thing for me for reflux though is eating anything that’s fatty and sweet - for example a danish pastry is the worst possible! Might help your mum to experiment with what she is eating that causes it.

Hi I’ve been on Omeprazole for years and it’s the only thing I’ve ever found that relieves my indigestion.

Hello All, hopefully this will be informative for some though I realise not all who suffer. I found my symptoms were, in fact, an allergic reaction to Omeprazole and 2 other ppi & H receptor drugs. After I stopped drugs I used Camomile tea to ease the symptoms until after a month I was back to normal. I also stopped using sweetners which can have an effect and ate 150g of kefir yoghurt daily to aid repopulate and balance stomach flora.
