What's my BMI now?

I was 5ft 8inches last year, now I'm 5ft 4. I always carried a bit of extra weight, but never bothered too much. However if I calculate it at my new height, it willbe horrendous! I'm already struggling with kyphosis,stomach protrusion, and body image. I have stayed a steady weight the past 7 months, but would really like to lose a stone to see if it would help discomfort, but I can't exercise enough to aid calorie burn...and I'm too miserable to cut out more carbs and sugar! I'm half jesting, because I know how to lose weight, ie eat less and exercise more, but as we all know, that's not easy in our state. I know I'm comfort eating...but who can blame me! I don't smoke, I don't drink, and I'm eating more low fat dairy than ever before to up the calcium...miracle cures welcome ..🤣

We all know how to lose weight but it's hard restricting your calorific intake when things are yummy! I too have kyphosis and osteo tum and doubt losing weight will change that atall. My weight has been steady at 10 1/2 but now creeping up, so go easy on the melon have strawberries instead. More protein less carbs, swap one sugary thing for one less so, and weigh myself every day so don't get shocked I've put on 3 lbs in a week. There's a list of foods on low glycemic index, googly it, helps. My mantra is nothing beginning with P, think about it! Though did have gammon and pineapple yest,oops! 🤭 Good luck. 🤞🍓🍏🥒🥚🍺 Yep, get most of my calories from beer- well a girl needs some fun!😂

I love sugar, could give up more cards,and don't like beer! I like sweet potato and low glycaemic index foods. I just use sugar for a quick mood lift! I should walk instead..I know. I used to love excercise to music..can't do it now

Me too. I do put on my music occ. and just wiggle bits that still work for a minute! Makes one feel better. Any exercise you can do helps but afraid it comes down to less calories if you can't burn them off, bummer eh? 🤭

You are right music lifts the mood, even a little bit of movement to favourite tunes helps..

I’m assuming because you lost 4 inches you had a lot of vertebral in one year? Were you on any bone medication? Walking is a very easy exercise to do. Best way to do it is do 20 minutes in the morning and 20 minutes in the evening and it won’t be so hard then it is more effective if you break it up rather than do it all in one walk. I have lost a lot of weight just by walking and then, when you reach your desired weight, you continue walking to maintain it then you can eat what you want. And even if it doesn’t change your kyphosis, it will probably make your breathing easier. If you have a lot of weight around your stomach and lungs, it impedes your breathing it’s always better to keep moving.

Walking is too painful for some of us, glad you can do that. If I could walk for that long I would be ecstatic ! I can barely stand/ walk for a few minutes but cannot up my meds as I can't afford to lose 3 stones again. Less calories is the only safe way to lose weight for those that can't exercise. Static ex help keep the circulation going and oedema at bay.

I had the back pain 4 months before they relented and did xray..lumber...2 months later thoracic..end result 7 wedge fractures. Just about to start bone meds, just got osteo diagnosis july, I need to do the double walks and see if it helps me lose stomach fat, because it does cause breathlessness as you say

It's fun eating but pain of looking in the mirror, wearing a tight fitting trouser where the waist buttons strain and the accompanying weight stress on the knees etc is a bigger pain than giving up in carbs and sugar. If you can give up both, have lots of protein and fat you should be ok. Have more butter, bacon, ham etc. That is my formula. Will also keep the Hb1Ac in check.

If you don't have naughty food in the house, you can't eat it surely.Get an exercise bike and have it at home. You're exercising and it's taking your weight so that should help too on joints.

Once you start exercising you'll feel so much better and you'll enjoy feeling the benefits.

The hardest bit is starting.

Positive mental attitude and all that!!

It's really hard isn't it. Just as an idea in case it works for you, how about swimming. That is a really good overall exercise for your body that is gentle on your body, especially if you find the right pool with easy access and the right temperature water. It is quite soothing on the aches and pains and you can build up what you do.

I wish I could swim cos I know it's a great way to exercise and kind to joints, but I'm no good in the water. Going to try walks twice a day and alter food groups on my plate..

I can relate exactly. I wasn’t overweight but since losing height I noe look fat. I’ve got a hump on my back and a protruding tummy like you. Now I’m shorter I could do with losing a stone or more but what’s life if you can’t eat what you want. I’m afraid I’m a sugarholic. 🤣

I cannot exercise but lost 4 stone by going low carb, then keto, ketovore and finally carnivore. Can eat as much as I want and never feel hungry. Eat two meals a day as I cannot eat enough in one meal.

That's interesting, I must try and alter my diet and reduce the carbs more. But getting enough calcium is an ongoing problem. Although I know the highest calcium is in dairy,can't eat too much cheese due to gallstones. But I always go lower fat versions for that reason, it's a full time job working it out. I was out this morning. But after an hour on my feet it's lie down time...

All these way of eating involved high fat. Fat does not make you fat, carbs do. Too much calcium is contraindicated in gallstones not fat which keeps you feeling full.

Lots of advice here on increasing your meat/dairy/fat intake. That may make you feel less hungry but many medics advise that those types of diet increase risk of cardiovascular disease and may be implicated in diabetes risk. Look at the British Heart Foundation website, for example. A plant-based diet, however, is considered to be healthier and is one I subscribe to. It may be hard at first to give up the foods you love, but believe me it can be just as satisfying if you do it right, and I don't easily put on weight on it. And no, vegans don't go short of protein - that's a myth.

I'm much more inclined to follow the plant based diet,also I have long standing gall stones so can't take high fat,though I enjoy the good fats, nuts, seeds, avocado etc. Last week I counted calories and calcium intake, managed to shift a few pounds, so motivation now in place. Actually, because I'm counting the calcium, there is much less room for unhealthy snacks! I don't enjoy being shorter, met a friend I hadn't been able to see for 8 months, first thing she said was, oh I can see you have lost height,cos I'm nearer to you now!

It sounds as though you are on the right road. I find that checking I'm getting a balanced plant-based diet keeps me away from the unhealthy snacks too. Nuts and seeds instead, as you say. I do have the occasional bit of chocolate though. As I eat dark chocolate (non-dairy) I find a couple of squares is enough to satisfy. It's all about re-educating yourself, I think. I didn't think I'd ever be able to give up cheese, but I don't miss it and on the rare occasion when I have eaten it, I've found it too rich for my taste. So people can change if they have the will. I've lost a couple of inches in the last few years but I'm really not much affected by osteoporosis so far. Trying to keep it that way! There are a lot of people here with severe problems. I'm one of the lucky ones.
