Taking calci-d

This may be a silly question - the instructions for taking calci-d say to take with the evening meal. Does this mean before, during or after the evening meal for best absorption?

I take Adcal D3 twice daily whenever I remember, as I only eat once a day. Does it really matter.

I dare say it depends on how you get on with the calcium carbonate in calci-d. I tried two calcium / vit D combinations and both had c carbonate which upset my gut ( I also have IBS though)

So I didn’t get on with calcium carbonate. In the end with agreement from my FLS nurse we decided I was getting enough dietary calcium and I bought my own D3 and opted to buy calcium that is derived from seaweed and I take half the recommended dose just as a top up. That works for me.

I don’t know for certain (I am not medically qualified) but your gut probably feels better if you take it with a meal, other than that I don’t think it matters if you take it before, middle of or just after a meal. You could always ask your pharmacist and see what they advise.

Thanks. I read that stomach acid helps with absorption but wasn’t sure of the optimum time to take it at dinner - hence my original question. Have only been taking it for a week and so far so good.

May see about the citrate option tho as the with/without food isn’t an issue

I knew it didn’t suit within a couple of days. It gets very inconvenient when you have to take a med - especially an antibiotic - at a certain time where food is concerned doesn’t it. Sometimes it’s just not convenient. Good luck with it.

Linusit ,

Always go for plant based supplements for better absorption of your supplements be it Ca, Mg or D3. Try to avoid synthetic supplements like Calcium Carbonate, etc. Vitamin D3 is absorbed better with Fatty foods. If you have Fatty foods in the morning or afternoon, better to have the supplements at that time rather than evening.

Claude AI says:

The best time to take your Calci-D supplement is with your evening meal, which generally means during the meal or immediately after finishing the meal. Taking the supplement with food helps improve the absorption of calcium and vitamin D in your body.

When you consume the supplement with a meal, the presence of other nutrients and the stimulation of digestive processes can enhance the uptake of calcium and vitamin D from the supplement. Stomach acid and digestive enzymes released during a meal contribute to better absorption of these nutrients.

It is not necessary to take the supplement before the meal, as the key factor is to have it in conjunction with food. However, if you forget to take it during the meal, it is still beneficial to take it shortly after you finish eating.
