Excellent Zoe Pod Cast/YouTube with Prof Cyrus Cooper & Prof Tim Spectre on explanation of osteoporosis and latest thinking on nutrition, exercise and treatments. It’s a long one but worth the listen and thoughts on latest research studies - may surprise many - especially on VitD/Calcium supplementation!

I found the discussion interesting but it needs to be listened to/ read carefully as in part it seems to suggest that vit D/ calcium supplementation is not recommended and is indeed advised against. But later they do refer to pregnancy and also supplementation when taking anti resorption drugs such as biphosphenates (see above)

It is also of note that both are firmly in favour of treatment of osteoporosis, particularly in higher fracture risk older age groups but not so much for younger people, with biphosphenates subject to taking the necessary holiday to avoid the worst side effects although even these they describe as very rare . Indeed Prof Spector said he had never seen an example of jawbone necrosis in all his 25 years running osteoporosis clinics

So an interesting read tho raises as many questions as it answers,!

I've heard of people who've developed jawbone necrosis following tooth extraction as a result of taking bisphosphonates, so I'm really surprised that Tim Spector hasn't once come across it! It is rare, but it does happen, with the risk increasing if you're on the medication for longer than 5 years, so it sounds a bit dismissive on Tim Spector's part to say he's never come across it!

Well not too sure how much clinical experience he does in Osteo as he is primarily a researcher and has changed his specialties more than a few times.

My takeaway was that nothing is simple or binary and context is everything. I thought interesting with some good insights. Still rather avoid treatments though but I guess it all depends on risk factors.

What was said about telling younger patients that they may not fall into the osteoporosis disease bracket echoed what Nick Birch told me - NHS classified me as osteoporosis but he osteopenia.
