I've got a chronic pain in my hand which flairs up at night. I've had one operation on it already but had no success but a 2nd consultant has suggested another operation that 'might' help. If I take naproxen or ibuprofen at night it helps me get sleep. During the day it's fine and I don't need to take medication. Worried about taking either of these drugs long term as don't fancy another operation. Is any of these better than others to take long term? Hear horror stories about effecting kidneys. I only take either 1 naproxen or 2 ibuprofen at night. Is that a dangerous dose long term?

Naproxen Vs ibuprofen
NSAIDS are not good for bone health. My docs have them on the "do not take" list. I've had hand surgery, on both of them, nerve issues. Seems they do get worse at night...I learned to sleep with arms straight and that helps a lot.
Southerngirl is quite right. NSAIDs interfere with cartilage renewal. Also they can be very hard on your stomach and may even lead eventually to a stomach bleed. Do you find warmth helps the pain? Maybe you need to find a way to keep your hands warmer if that's the case. It's also possible that physiotherapy could help you more than further experimental (as in it "might" work) surgery.
What is actually the diagnosis as to what is wrong with your hand, what op did you have? Naproxen bad for kidneys, ibuprofen bad for guts! I was on 1.5 g of ibuprofen for nr. 3 years = colitis for 18 yrs. now down to occ. ibs. Not good!
Can you use the gel that way it bypasses your guts? Maybe a sports wrap? I use them when often sprain something, supports and keeps warm. If pain very severe a patch would again bypass guts but drs only use if chronic pain. Good luck. 🤞
I saw these arthritis gloves at Walgreens - gloves you wear for physical pain ? would that help ?
I saw all the comments - I know people are opposed to over the counters NSAID’s , there is also Tylenol Arthritis which I guess people don’t like that either.
How about Ice packs?
I personally if it was me and had to take nsaid I would rotate advil one night, alleve the next night and Tylenol arthritis the next night. A pharmacist once told me to rotate to prevent problems, but I think the arthritis gloves might give relief?
I heard the patches are good too.
I’ve had times in my life where I fall asleep with ice packs on my pain for many nights or weeks etc . Also Bromelein is a natural supplement that helps joints and turmeric helps inflammation but I heard to get organic.
Like I said, I was on 1.5g (3 x 500mg) ibuprofen per day for nr. 3 years trying to keep going, my job etc. You need to eat before you take to protect guts which they eat away, I was unable to do this as too busy, mobile etc plus would have ended up the size of a house! It's now recommended you only take for a few days, not as a daily med for ages. Eventually I had a back op on 2 discs, which had adhered to sciatic nerve, not good result till I had a hysterectomy and they scraped a large fibroid off my sacrum. 🙄 Now 6 spinal #s from O.P so badly drawn body from the start! 😁🤷♀️
I had a minor impact on my hand which led to a synovectomy extensor compartment left wrist and removal prominent bone base of metacarpal left ring finger. I'm still getting pain at night only for some reason. Ice helps for a short time. Heat doesn't as much. Probably makes it a bit worse with heat. Naproxen and ibuprofen seem to do the trick. My consultant has now done a further CT scan and can see something that 'might' be causing the pain so has suggested another operation to take it out. Not that keen on another operation so was wondering if managing the pain at night would be the correct thing to do with naproxen or ibuprofen. I've tried the gloves and not had any success. Even tried CBD oils. Has anyone used professional cryotherapy on the hands?
neither ……. hemp CBD no THC magnificent for pain of any kind
