Don't know about the Vitamin D, but calcium should be taken in doses no larger than about 400 mg at a time as the body cannot absorb more. If you get some Vitamin K2 that will help the calcium be directed to the bones so it doesn't settle on the walls of blood vessels and in organs where you don't want it. Adequate magnesium is also important as you want to maintain the calcium/magnesium balance. Lots of magnesium in food as magnesium is to green plants what iron is to animals. You can also quite comfortably get magnesium through Epsom salts soak, even a footbath if you are usually a shower person.
Hi HeronNS, thank you for your reply, the calcium dosage on the box is 500mg/400IU, calcium and vitamin D supplement, on writing this I've just checked the vitamin D which after 7 weeks I'll be using 800 units, so this might be a trip to ask the pharmacist but I'm thinking just the calcium ones after 7 weeks not the 2, feel I'm walking through a minefield with all this at the moment
We need half magnesium to calcium, vitamins D & K2, & also boron for bone replacement. Without the other cofactors, excess calcium can end up causing atherosclerosis & other problems in our bodies.
I take 300-400mcg of chelated magnesium a day to balance the high calcium in my diet, 3,500iu of cholecalciferol from autumn to spring, & 2,000iu in summer. D & K2 are best absorbed with foods containing fat. Vitamin K2 is available in supplements or in fermented food like kefir, as well as some cheeses such as brie, roquefort or edam. Boron is also available as a supplement or from chia seeds. There are also combination D3 & K2 sprays & supplements.
Chelated Mg is the most bioavailable (best absorbed). It's also absorbed well through the skin, either from bath soaks containing 400-500g of Mg chloride hexahydrate crystals or epsom salts. There are also body sprays available. They're expensive to buy, though very cheap to make at home by diluting 200g of Mg crystals in 200-250mls boiled water (I use witch hazel with a lower dilution as it can sting sensitive skin).
I don't think it will make any difference whether you take 2 Vit D tablets on the same day, or 1 twice a week, as it stays in your bloodstream for a long time. Personally I'd spread them out (1 twice a week) to lessen peaks and troughs, but over such a short course it really won't matter. Once you've finished your 7 week course, I assume you'll be continuing calceos with the 800iu Vit D, which would give a total Vit D of 1200iu, which is a lot better than many doctors prescribe! Your doctor almost certainly won't have mentioned it, but I agree with Heron that it's best to also take magnesium and Vit K2 (K2-MK7 or K2-MK4), to make sure the calcium goes to your bones.
I have recently been diagnosed with osteoporosis after falling on ice and breaking my femur in four places in January. I have been doing a lot of reading on supplements. This forum has been helpful. I remarked to a friend that my Dr. Or the osteoporosis fracture nurse at the hospital did not mention taking k2, magnesium or boron. Why is this if they are important?
Oh dear Ebiegal, so sorry to hear about your fractures and I do hope your femur is healing well. Unfortunately most doctors don't seem to know about taking other supplements with Vitamin D3. When I mentioned K2 to my GP he asked "what's that?"!! Here's an informed article about the value of these, plus silicon, although not everyone will agree with the quantities suggested, particularly Vit D: ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl...
Thanks so much. I appreciate you answering. I'm still healing. 31/2 months and I'm still not walking on my own. I am practicing walking using one crutch. Doing the bending exercises to work on those thigh muscles. Tmr I'm going to a chair yoga class at our local fire hall. Four classes in May. This is new to me. I'm going to work on exercise. I walked a lot and miss that.
