New osteoporotic 66 year old. I have not seen a healthcare professional since my diagnosis a month ago. I have a question. I go horse riding about 10 times a month. Very calm horse, no jumping or galloping. Like all horses he occasionally spooks. I am able to control him. In the past 3 years I have fallen off once, didn’t break anything.
Do I continue to ride or call it a day and stop? I cannot make a decision.
Only you can make that decision. You know your own body the best, your medical history and how confident you feel riding a horse. What those in the medical word would say to you, I have no idea. You could ask the question, but would you listen to them if it was not the reply you wanted to hear? 
Did a quick google search and the first thing that comes up is an ad for some special kind of seating pad. I assume this is to protect the spine from being jolted too much. What are the readings for your spine? Not that I know anything about this, but questions to ask yourself as you make your decision. I hope you can keep on riding. 🐎
Hello........... I rode my entire life. I gave it up partially due to my osteoporosis which is pretty severe. My therapist said it would be "disastrous" if I took a fall. I guess I might go by how bad your Tscores are........ and I have had a prior fracture in foot from doing nothing but walking. I hated to give up riding..........but horses can be unpredictable, even the gentle ones.............. my 2nd horse was old and arthritic so the timing coincided with my poor bone diagnosis............. she became unrideable so at that point I gave it up, after many decades of loving riding and 2 great horses. I hope you can continue riding. Ask your Doctor or physical therapist just how fragile your bones are but it's always going to be a risk. My one Docctor said she has patients with my scores (-3s and some -2.5s) who have fractured spine just plopping into a chair! That info scared me............. as horse riding can be bouncy and pounding on the spine............ lots to think about! But I do miss my horsey activities that's for sure.
For some reason my lumbar spinal T scores are normal to osteopenic, it is my neck of femur that is osteoporotic. I wonder if my lumbar spine is better because of doing the sitting trot. The Dexa doesn’t measure the thoracic spine. My PT isn’t happy with me riding. I know that the Dexa doesn’t measure the trabecular (spongy) bone. I assume that with my ongoing activity that my bone are not too brittle.
I am very similar............spine in better shape than other areas. I've toyed with idea of going over to stable nearby and checking out their lessons etc. Tho what I had really loved was trail riding. Maybe they offer some easy trail rides. I should check it out. Arizona has some fabulous areas for that and it is so sad I cannot take advantage of that. Of course I don't have my own horse now anyhow.............. but when I see the trail riders I get pangs of missing it. I had a great half arab for 24 yrs, and then a full arab for another 18 yrs. Both great horses. Tho the expense......... after the 2nd, I had to realize if I really wanted to retire, no more horse ownership. I say ride as long as possible and just use caution which I'm sure you do.
