I'm new to to Health Unlocked so thought I'd say hello, and tell you a little about myself. I have Osteoporosis and have been on the drug Prolia for the last four years, since starting I have not had anymore broken bones and all seems to be going well.

Hi Sunnyjules

I like your positive posting. It is good to hear. :)

What bones did you break to be diagnosed with OP?

Do you have an exercise regime and do you take supplements?

Hi Deb18,

This is all very new to me,so I'll try and work out how it works Good to hear from you. I have been on Prolia now for about four years and have the jab in my thigh each time, latest one was this week and feeling fine, two more than a Dexa scan to see how thing are, so far there has been an improvement. Good luck with yours and I hope it all goes well.

Hi Lilact when i had my first prolia injection I did have a couple of colds in quick succession. Whether it was a side effect or coincidence I am not sure. Been ok since my 2nd injection a month ago. The thing is everyone is different and what suits one may not suit another. All a bit of a gamble...

Be aware of problem coming off prolia and also jaw issues with extractions.

Thank you MWZ3. I have just had a tooth out at the hospital and all was well. What sort of problems should I look out for when coming off prolia?

There is a danger of rebound vertebral fractures and some are now saying it is not safe to come off prolia. Maybe this should all be discussed prior to starting prolia. If you have a specialist ask him or her to explain this to you.

Ask about resorption when you stop too. What happens to bone when prolia is stopped suddenly? They should be able to discuss this with you as well.

There has been some discussion about prolia on here. Look for headings about rebound effect.

Thank you for this information, some of it I did know but not in such detail. I will follow in up with our specialist Nurse Practioner.

Hi Sunnyjules

It is good to hear positives about Prolia. I have tried to put off having prolia injections for several years trying exercise, vitamins and diet to improve my bones. After fracturing leg, vertebraes, ribs and broken hip last year, my doctor warned me that if I didnt take any medication for my bones I will end up in wheelchair! I resisted the drugs whilst waiting to see endocrinologist hoping they would find a cause for my extremely low bone denisity, I am 57yrs old was fit and healthy vitamin D levels and calcium levels are great. Also every time I fracture I get blood clots in my lungs. I was told when I was in hospital for the repair to broken hip that they would get to the bottom of the cause. After waiting for months to see specialist all he could say just one of those things take the prolia! I got really scared reading up on Prolia and kept putting it off until my Dr said that the side effects are less dangerous than not doing anything about my bones. So last month I bit the bullet and had the Prolia. No side effects so far, still worried about what happens when coming off it, but hoping there will be new research into medications by then. Glad to hear you are doing well on prolia. Did you get any side effects at all from the injections?

HORRIBLE SIDE EFFECTS FROM PROLIA FROM EVERY BODY SYSTEM

THAT'S ME...NO MORE DON'T CARE - RUINED MY LIFE!

I spoke too soon when I said I had no side effects from prolia. A couple weeks after I had a red sore rash all over my body, pains in back legs arms, chest pains, headaches and felt like I had been hit by a truck! Joints swelled with inflammation and flare up of lupus. Which lasted for months. After numerous test and several months Dr came to the conclusion that it was all caused by the Prolia injection and not to have anymore. Now still concerned about rebound fractures but Dr didn't know anything about that! Was suggested to take strontium or Evista when I looked them up there was black box warning not to take if ever had pulmonary embolisms of which I have had. So now just take vitamins, excerise and diet and hope for the best. Ridiculous that medication that is meant to strengthen bones can actually cause more problems and fractures. Due to have a bone density test in the next few months just hope it hasn't decreased too much and the vitamins etc have worked.
