Fatigue and BP meds

I have been taking Losartan 25mg for a few months now but suffering from tiredness quite badly. I don't sleep too well anyway but wouldn't normally feel this exhausted. Do all BP meds cause fatigue ?

They shouldn't.

I'm the opposite.

It was because I was suffering huge fatigue, that I went to the doctor. My BP was up to 200.

I was given Amlodipine 5 and it was miraculous - fatigue disappeared and BP down to 150s. He added Olmersatin 10 to the mix, and I seem to be doing real well.

Not much help to you, I'm afraid,

Have you checked your BP recently?

Or perhaps ask for different med-- theyay have different side effects.

Good luck.

Hi BobbyCollins,

I have been taking losartan 25mg for three years now but it has never caused tiredness for me. I also take amlodipine 5mg and that doesn't make me feel tired either.

I don't think they should cause you to feel tired so perhaps mention it to your GP tomorrow when you speak to him/her and let us know how you get on.

whilst all medications can have side effects, they do vary person to person. Do check with your doctor, and also if you are on good terms with your pharmacist have a chat with him or her - their profession is more clued up on medications and their side effects than doctors are.

Hello BobbyCollins, many drugs including inhalers can cause tiredness as a side effect, don't be afraid to stop them for a few days to see if it is the drug because then you can speak to the Gp about it and maybe try something better. I had an inhaler recently and it made me so tired plus other symptoms its been given the boot. If you already had tiredness then this could just be adding to it rather than trying to establish a cause. Take care and do book another appointment with the Gp or ask your chemist to check the Losartan I am sure tiredness is one of its side effects . I take a larger dose than you.

Thanks Katie I think it may be a combination of things. But big thanks to all who have replied. Will keep posted if I find Losartan is the cause. Cheers everyone

I took Losartan for about 5 years. I was on 25mg but then they didn’t seem to work any more so they were increased to 50 and then 100. I started feeling really tired and off balance and had some blood tests which showed the Losartan had lowered my sodium levels to below the normal range. Came off them and the fatigue etc went and my levels returned to normal If you get blood tests done ask them to check your sodium levels because it could be that.

Thanks ChrissiG that sounds a possibility by sheer accident I forgot to take a tablet yesterday and felt great ?

hi, yes can totally relate. When I started ramipril I just felt exhausted all the time. Recently switched to losartan 25 and now 12.5. I’m sure the lowering of your Bp causes that exhausted feeling!

BobbyCollins profile image
BobbyCollins in reply toim989

Horrible isn't it ? How are your readings on 12.5 ?

im989 profile image
im989 in reply toBobbyCollins

I’ve not dared do them yet. I was dizzy on 25 and my readings were about 110/70 so I persuaded the doctor to reduce the dose. I’m currently struggling with tingling fingers. There’s always something! Hope you get sorted

Hi. I’m new to this forum. I’ve been on various HBP meds and have settled on Lercanidipine and Losartan. However I feel tired and don’t seem to have the same energy levels anymore (although I am 66. 36 in my head) but I don’t consider myself old. My doctor tole me only yesterday that the tablets do cause fatigue. But at least my BP is down. I have adjusted to the need for these tablets and still enjoy what I do but at a gentler pace. I agree with others tho that it’s a shame these meds can make you feel rough!!

Hi yes that all sounds very similar to me. I am 67 and its very annoying ! Thank you for responding. Good luck

Thank you

I would not have thought of leaving off the tablets for a day or two like some have done, but maybe I will and see what happens. Could help when I need to get through a busy day. Wouldn’t do it regularly though.

Hi BobbyCollins, may I ask how how you got on with your fatigue? My husband has recently had his Losartan dose increased and is really struggling with fatigue. He’s also a bit irritable - I guess because of the tiredness. I came here to search to see if there was a connection and came across your post. Interesting comment someone made about the sodium.

BobbyCollins in reply toMrs-Champers

Hi Mrs Champers sorry to hear your husband is having issues. I had some bloods done for tiredness which said I was anaemic and now being referred to Colo rectal clinic as I also have IBS. However the pharmacist agreed to lower Losartan to 12.5 mg and though only been a week I do feel better. I did notice on Losartan 12.mg info leaflet that it may cause anaemia. I am seeing GP next week so will keep you posted

Good luck!
