Amlodipine side effect

Has anyone experienced a terrible itch using Amlodipine?

I can’t find the exact spot, it moves around, even my fingers. I’ve actually taken a lump of skin off I’ve been scratching so much. I’m also on Simvostatin.

The GP suggested I come off them for 2 weeks to see if it gets better but says he is running out of ideas to bring my BP down as I have bad side effects with Losertan and very high doses of Perindropil.

On certain web sites it lists itching as a side effect but so does Simvastatin. I would do as the GP suggests with each one, that way you'll know which is responsible. Good luck.

Hi BikerBabe, yes I also get bad itching from Amlodipine. It is mainly my hands but also face, feet and back on and off. I have cut my dose to 2.5 mg as I couldn’t stand it and that has helped a bit but I would like to try something else, maybe one of the Ace Inhibitors. I’m just afraid to be made to feel even worse. I have had other side effects from Amlodipine such as increased anxiety, insomnia, and weight gain. Good luck!

Yes. I had the itch with Amlodipine. It wasn’t as bad as the aching legs though but it was very irritating. Sounds like you have it bad. Because of mainly these 2 symptoms I moved to Ramipril. I’m on lower dosage and legs ache much less. I still get an itch but it’s much less and only affects me immediately after the tablets and for a shorter time. We are all different but may be worth a try, there are lots of alternatives so don’t give up

The GP who called me said we are running out of options but to be honest my BP is about the same or slightly lower having been off them for a week than what it was when I was taking the Amlodipine. He said to start them again after 2 weeks but I’m not sure I will.

Forgot to mention this. Are you sure it’s Amlodipine. I suffer occasionally from Hives when my body gets warm. I usually get over it, but if it carries on I take OTC antihistamines for no more than a couple of days (no more). Always stops it right in its tracks. Just Google ‘hives and hot body temperature’ if you want to learn more. You never know?

I take anti histamine as a matter of course (hay fever etc). It only started when I started taking them and stopped a few days after I stopped. No rash to see just a terrible itch but it didn’t seem to be any one place, when I scratched 1 place it seemed to be further over. Horrible

Ah ok. Hives gives you a noticeable rash sometimes with welts. Not that then

Yes. My husband sometimes has anaphylaxis so IAM used to seeing hives, definitely not that. Thanks anyway. I described it to the GP as like chickenpox/shingles without the rash

I am experiencing some of the itching as well, and plan to discuss with my doctor on next visit.

Hi, sorry to hear about your side effects. I have been on amlodipine for 8 years now and get random side effects out of the blue, the latest one bring an itch on the upper back which is difficult to reach and stop. It drives me crazy sometimes but seems to be easing recently after weeks on end. Hopefully this will ease or stop for you as you are running out of options it seems. Take care

Thanks, I’ve been stopped taking it for nearly 2 weeks and the itch has gone completely. My BP seems to be lower than when I was taking it too 🤷‍♀️

That's interesting. There always seems to be some sort of unexpected changes and variations to how regular meds work.
