Not alone

Hi glad I've found this site. At least I know looking through alot of the posts that I'm not alone. I'm 40 kinda fit don't smoke or not a big drinker not really overweight but my GP picked up my blood pressure was really high back in February being at 172/114 so since February I've been put on amlodipine 10mg, indapamide 2.5mg and ramipril. So far blood pressure has dropped to avg 143/84. But due to the medication I've totally not been myself. Struggling to sleep, pins and needles. Neck pain, headaches and feel as if my heads in a bubble sometimes. Was seeing is this normal for having high blood pressure and suppose the medication as I was thinking there was something terrible wrong with me. Still haven't been told by my gp what has caused the high BP.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

I had similar side effects to you when I began blood pressure meds but mine improved with the passage of time. I was never told about the side effects - and not everyone has them - but some people do and they are tough to begin with but, to reiterate, they do lessen over time.

I hope this helps.

Most BP medication will come with an array of side effects. They try to overide a situation that has built up over several months and so take a while to readjust.Have you ever looked into natural methods using adaptogens?...a good place to start is olive leaf extract or flaxseed oil...these not only lower blood pressure to normal levels naturally....they reduce inflammation in the vessels due to their antiviral antibacterial anti inflammatory actions...the prime cause of blood pressure spikes.

Any food that increases Nitric Oxide in your body has the same effect...you must cut out sugar and excessive carb intake too...these things alone cause huge inflammation through insulin resistance. You will be surprized how easy it is to bring things under your control using natural methods that do not have side effects other than feeling well.

Difficult when the medication has such an effect. I have always tolerated Ramipril but when Diltiazem SR 180mg( small dose) was added 2 years ago to control my B/P further I felt like a cloud had descended on my head most afternoons, I felt so fatigued. This was difficult doing a full time job but in a few months my body had adjusted. My B/P is now well controlled. Keeping weight down and moderate exercise has really helped. Good luck with everything.

You are certainly not alone Mark24. It seems that all BP medications and combinations of medications have some terrible side effects. I have been on various BP medications since my late thirties with more being added. For a long time I was stable with no real side effects, but for the last few years I have whole range of side effects and they do not get better over time. The problem at the moment is whenever I raise this with my GP (telephone consultations only now and a different GP each time) the only solution they come up with is yet more medication or increased dosage. I don't feel that these side effects are taken seriously enough, somewhat like the side effects of Statins weren't being believed.

I'm certainly agreeing with what other posters have written. Are you aware of the charity Blood Pressure UK? It gives lots of tips and help on lifestyle issues. You might find that it all settles down after a few weeks but if not, you could go to your pharmacist and talk to them. Pharmacists really do know a lot about medications, their side effects and inter-reactions. They might give you some guidance, and then you can go back to your doctor - if things haven't improved - with more knowledge.

In the meantime make sure you have moderate exercise and that your diet is full of vegetables!

Hi Mark, I relate with you in having high blood pressure because I am always struggling with mine. You have been given some good advice, so let me approach the problem from a different angle. You might want to educate yourself on what side effect you might expect from a certain drug. Two good sites are drugs.com and rxlist.com.

i have had pins and needles and bad headaches from amlodipine and may be swiching over.

Thanks for all the comments and advice. But what is everyone's BP while on meds I'm still at 140/80s and does not seem to be dropping or it that a normal BP just now. And major question I've still not been told what has caused the high BP🤔🤔

Mine is now low at about 105/70 or even lower but it wasn't like that immediately. I felt completely rubbish at first and my bp was where yours is initially. Give yourself time to adjust to all this medication and to the idea of having a chronic health condition. It settles down. In the meantime try to do things that help you relax when you can and get outside whenever you can. Also have a look at the Blood Pressure Association site, as has been recommended for tips on diet and lifestyle, others stories etc. All the best.🙂
