Diet to help Portal Hypertension.

New to the group, and have just been diagnosed with portal hypertension and hepatic encephalopathy. This has been found while wanting to operate on existing chrones disease. Really confused about what I should eat, what is safe regarding exercise etc. Has anyone else got both conditions and can give advice on managing this?

Many Thanks

Hello Buzz-light year (love the name). You’ll know that this diagnosis is a rare one so you’ll not get very many replies from people who’ve got your specific condition.I’m surprised the medical professionals treating you haven’t given information.

Saying that, your main goal is to protect your liver and your heart from further damage, and as you are aware diet and exercise are the ways you can help yourself.

If you go to Blood Pressure UK website there’s advice and help on these.

Basically, a diet that’s full of vegetables and natural foods is the way to go. Processed foods like pies and sausages should only form a tiny part of your diet for a special occasion. All food should be raw (like salads) or cooked from scratch - you’ll find recipes or links to recipes on the site.

As far as exercise goes, that depends on your age and level of fitness. Do at least three hours of moderate exercise (where your pulse goes up a bit and you are breathing more heavily but still able to talk) per week. Walking is wonderful!

I wish you well.

Hi Buzz-Lightyear, sorry to hear of your diagnosis. Natural diet as Happyrosie says is the way to go. I would also look at the videos by Dr Eric Berg about the keto diet, and fatty liver. It may be of some help to you.

You may want to check out the British Liver Trust forum. It has a larger community there, and has posts re hepatic encephalopathy. You could post your query there as well.
