Does anyone know if you have side effects from amlodipine (I had awful breathlessness) whether you would have the same problem if you tried another type of CCB. They have put me on Ramipril now, but as I’m 61 I wondered if this would be as effective. Also the dreaded cough is starting. Thanks for your help.

I was taken off Amlodipine as it made me feel very ill. Bloated so much I looked like Tweedledum. Now on Felodipine with no side effects at all.

If you look at any of the forums, there are hundreds of complaints about Amlodopine. From my perspective it is the worst drug on the market and crippled me. I took it for two years are was becoming more and more incapacitated. I thought I was getting 'old'. I am 60 and used to go the gym 3 times a week. I eventually had to stopped going I felt so tired, listless and motivation disappeared. I was sweating and breaking into palpitation in the night. Sleeplessness followed, then nightmares when I slept (all reported common side effects on websites; also look at your leaflet in the pill packet, all listed there). Then I started getting pains in my right shoulder and could not sleep on it. Then pains in the outer thigh. In the end, I went to the GP who failed to listen to my complaint, said that my blood pressure was not coming down and doubled the dose. The next day, I could hardly move and the penny dropped. I dropped back to 5mg and it eased off but by this time the damage was done. I went back to the GP who referred me for a scan. They diagnosed a bursa in my shoulder and tendonitis, a known side effect (although rarely admitted by GPs and pharmacists who insist it is 'rare'). I am now under a physiotherapist. I took myself off Amlodopine and feel better than I have for years. Getting back to my old self. I have given up on doctors and medication as I think the way forward for high blood pressure has to be life style changes. Drop salt, drink a freshly squeezed lemon in hot water every morning first thing, take potassium supplements, have salads with cider vinegar and olive oil, exercise more. Check out the alternative methods in lowering blood pressure as Amlodopine is dangerous for some people (not all by some accounts). When I checked my BP when I was on it, and after I came off it - no change - so it had been useless all along, just damaging. If necessary try and other BP drug under supervision.
