Nasal drip

I know this has been discussed before but has anyone found an effective cure. Been prescribed two different nasal sprays both of which made me more SOB as I have stage4 emphysema. Also tried different brands of antihistamines. Whenever I use my oxygen phlegm slides down back of nose and collects at the back of throat. During the day it’s not so unbearable as I can clear it but over night it tends to thicken up which makes it difficult to breath and swallow. Any advice would be welcome.

Have you tried Sterimar? An over the counter sterile saline solution. If saline works for you then you could invest in the Neilmeds kit with which you can make your own saline with warm boiled water to use before bed. I have it and the sachets of sterile salt but I found it a fiddle plus my PND isn't too bad now. P

I was going to suggest the same thing. I've found sterimar helps.

No lung problems to contend with on top, and I haven’t got any amazing answers for you, but I’ve had permanent PND for the last…15 years?Something like that, anyway, and it’s constant. Absolutely anything that goes up my nose almost immediately ends up in my throat, including the anaesthetic on the two occasions they’ve scoped me to see what was going on - numbed my throat, did sod all for my nose, and wasn’t pleasant as a result, particularly with the rigid scope I had the first time. I have a mildly deviated septum, but apparently not enough that it would explain the extent of the problem. Antihistamines do nothing, steroid sprays do nothing except aggravate my throat, no joy with saline rinses, my sinuses have been cleared as completely normal via CT, but there are times when I can barely swallow for it. Really grim. It can also make me dry cough quite a bit when I lie down at night, so I’ve taken to sleeping a little bit more propped up, which also seems to help for when I wake up in the morning. The other thing that can help with mucus of any description is drinking enough water or non-caffeinated/alcoholic beverages. The guidance is 2 litres in addition to any caffeinated drinks, not instead of - I do find mucus is thinner generally since I went completely decaf everything about 6 years ago as a result of a heart problem.

Sorry to hear that on top of everything else Charlie. Mine's caused by blocked sinuses an d I definitely agree re cutting out caffeine and drinking plenty to dilute what's in the head. I wish they'd invent a mucylotic for head , drug companies would make a fortune 😕

Same here LOL 😃 all nasal drip suffering. I tried 3 or 4 different sprays over the years, nothing helped. Hot lemon water in the morning helps me sometimes, because I can bring it up. But I cannot drink it every day, getting tummy ache sometimes.

Hope one day there will be something useful for all of us 🙂.

Take care everyone enjoy a nice evening, I have cake now LOL 😘

Oh dear, I know just how you feel but unfortunately have no solution. In fact I was hoping to hear an encouraging answer myself. I have had this problem almost every summer for 25 years, usually starts around April and lasts until the autumn. It causes catarrh on the vocal chords so I have trouble with a very croaky voice. Fortunately it's not painful but hard work talking and making myself heard, especially on the phone or in a crowded room. Have tried all the usual remedies and camera down twice. At least it's it's not life threatening or I would have been gone years ago. This year I have had to stress to people that I have not got Covid!! I do find it reassuring that other people have it as I haven't come across anyone else myself. Sorry I can't help, hope someone comes up with something for us all?

I, too, was hoping to hear of a magic cure!

I seem to have permanent PND and was told many years ago that it is due to allergic rhinitis and I am allergic to dust mites. Not much hope there then! I could choose to live in a sterile box, but prefer to have a bit of carpet around (softer landings for falling on) and don't get around to daily damp dusting as I prefer to do other things.

So, it seems, I can only really blame myself for not getting rid of it. Meanwhile, I take antihistamine and Beconase nasal spray on a daily basis (with occasional breaks) and still continue to suffer.

It's horrible!

Hi Mike. I read about a food supplement the other day called serrapeptase which is supposed to help dry up mucus. I can't find the article now but I think it's sold on health shops. If I find the article again I will send you the link but I think you would need to consult your GP to make sure it won't interfere with any medication you currently take.

I have the same problem , it also makes me cough constantly, sometimes particularly in the hayfever season, my nose runs at the same time as i am coughing and I choke, it is all vile as I am also breathless on the move. Dr don’t help much. I find Neils med nasal rinse helps, plus double dose of loratadine, eating little and often and a drying up nasal spray Metasone, I think that is the name or similar, I don’t have it with me at the moment.

I also find using a nebuliser hand held can ease it temporally. Haven’t tried yet because of covid, but I believe learning to breath certain ways and learning how to clear the flem in the morning can help, I am usually sick in the process, all very unpleasant and hell for any one around listening. Good luck

Hi there, I have suffered this for most of my adult life and also have nasal polyps. My daily routine is to sluice my nose with a salt solution (Neilmeds - from most chemists or online) - it really helps clean the nasal passages and washes out pollen, etc, which irritate the lining and cause more mucus production. Hope this helps!

Have had postnasal drip for decades, really affected so many aspects of life. Tried all the usual suggestions- Sterimar, NeilMed, sprays, dietary changes - nothing really worked, some had temporary benefit but then seemed to lose their effect. Just before Christmas, while seeing new doc for something else, I mentioned the PND, she put me on 2 week antibiotics (can’t remember which🙄) then Mometasone Furoate nasal spray 50mg. This has actually worked brilliantly for over six months now, can hardly believe it - and I’m just hoping it doesn’t lose its efficacy over a longer period 🤞

It is a steroid, so not sure if they’ll be hair keeping me on it forever but the relief has been wonderful and I seem to have been staying healthier in other ways too.

Good luck with finding your cure

As fruitcake100 has said a neilmed nasal rinse used once or twice a day will help. (Make your own solution as per NHS website). This is the first thing an ENT doctor will tell you to use. The spray mentioned is mometasone a steroid spray only available on prescription. I’ve had my sinuses cleared out twice but things improved for me when I started using a nebuliser twice a day. More beneficial if you use the face mask.

While it is not a cure, I have reduced my PND by inhaling asafoetida vapours, especially during the evening and also by stimulating the nasal lining just before going to bed- this clears the upper airways and less moisture is available during the night. These tactics are described in my book about bronchiectasis.Good luck

Hi Mike after reading the post on Omeprazole day before yesterday, prompted me to let my doc know re acid reflux, on further investigation about silent reflux I discovered symptoms of nasal drip and mucus in back of throat can be one of the symptoms.

I am on day 3 of omeprazole at the moment, still using sterima nasal spray but not had any other symptoms.

I had always thought it was from the sinuses too but now I am thinking its silent reflux symptoms.

I posted a couple of links here: healthunlocked.com/blf/post...

Check out Royal Berkshire pdf link as well.

Of course if mine definitely is silent reflex I am hope the omeprazole is going to do the trick.

Best wishes BK
