I’ve been given Sertraline for anxiety. Haven’t been able to sleep so took two codine. Felt increased anxiety the next day. Is this common?

Hello Seashell54,

Patient info can be found here with sleep disturbances listed - hope it’s only a short term issue 😴

I took Sertraline a while back. The GP told me to take half a tablet for two weeks before moving on to the whole one. This was to prevent one side effect of nausea.

To come off them I bought a pill cutter & took 3 months.

I'd read the leaflet thoroughly as with any new medication. They take a while to work, not overnight change.

Hello Seashell54. My daughter takes Sertraline each day after breakfast and each night takes 2 Kalms and she gets a perfect night’s sleep. Even when she’s had a really bad day with anxiety, 2 Kalms still work at night really well. You can buy Kalms in every supermarket or chemist. She advises that you cut down on caffeine or drink herbal tea. Kalms are herbal.

Hi Seashell

I have been taking sertraline for over a year now I do get a head ache but take two paracetamol as they are not as bad, but sleeping is a problem but due to high blood pressure I also have to take Ramapril in the morning and carvedilol in the evening before bed time but again I do take paracetamol.

sleep disorders should be discussed with your GP, maybe as you have anxiety issues there could be underlying problems, have you had counselling? maybe an avenue to explore?

Hope you get some sleep soon,

Happy and Healthy New Year

Hello Oldspark! Thank you for your comment! Sorry to hear you have trouble sleeping due to high blood pressure.

I am going to see my GP tomorrow about the sleep issue. I have self referred for counselling and have an assessment tomorrow.

I only have trouble sleeping when I’m anxious. The Sertraline initially increases my anxiety so find it hard to calm down at night. Im going to give night nurse a go tonight as this has worked well when I had flu years ago.

Happy New Year! Xxxx

Hi Seashell

I try not to do any type of medication, as an very old friend of mine who was a pharmacist said each pill has a side effect and doctors give you another to counteract the side effect and the cycle goes on, but as I have had High blood pressure for many years, the Carvediliol is the only one that has zero effect on me, but counselling has helped me enormously, it used to be not considered manly to see a trick cyclist, and just get on with it. but some things cannot stay hidden for so long without having consequences on your physical and mental well being.

good luck with everything.

Happy new year
